That agrees to buy something, signs a contract and then tries to get out of it by simply ignoring the salesperson for weeks on end?

If you are then you are spineless and a little pathetic tbh.

The salesperson isn't going to fire-bomb your house. If you're upfront then they'll probably do anything they can to help or at worst, thank you for your time and honesty and move on.

That is all.

Nope, but I have sympathy for the OP.

Sales stuff is a big part of my day, I spend half my time speaking to people who say "yeah that sounds great, give me a call next week and we'll go ahead" only for them to spend a month "on the phone" when I try to call them - honestly just say "no" I won't hound you, I wouldn't try to talk you around, just say "no thanks" and we can both get on with our lives. I'm not a flash "I could sell sand to the Arabs me mate" kind of person, I work in a highly technical, Business to Business role - I'd be stupid to try to foot-jammed-in-the-door 80's double glazing salesman act, because I'm usually talking to a purchase manager or at least the MD/FD of a decent sized business - I don't know why they turn into such cowards when they change their mind or more likely they just didn't want to say no in the first place.

I don't know why we get treated with such distrust and contempt - pretty much everyone in the private sector owes their job in part to someone along the line who sold the thing/service they make, fix or do.

Or perhaps you might be the kind of person who agrees to come and do work at someone's house which they spend 2 days preparing for, resulting in every room bar kitchen and bathroom, but including the SHED! in total upheaval. Then turn up on the day to say, sorry I can't do the job till next week. Next you turn up at the rearranged time and declare you can in fact only do about 30% of the agreed job and have no idea when or desire to complete the remaining 70%. All this knowing that there is no likelihood of finding a replacement tradesman within month.

and Breathe.

Or perhaps you might be the kind of person who agrees to come and fit windows at my house which I have spent 4 days preparing for, and now in total upheaval. Then you turn up on the day to say, fit one window, break glass in the patio windows and then state "sorry mate I can't finish the job till next week, it's not my fault I tried to fit the double glazing panes with a hammer". the state "I can't get replacements because they need to be made and they are really busy at the moment". Next you turn up at the rearranged time and declare you can in fact only do about 40% of the agreed job and have a go at me for complaining about the broken panes..

and kill him

I wouldn't do that in general and would usually just say no.

However, having repeatedly told a double glazing salesman (Safestyle) that I didn't want his windows at anywhere near the price quoted as I could get them far cheaper, having watched him 'ring his boss' a couple of times to sweeten the deal and having had repeated confirmation that I could cancel the order if I changed my mind I finally 'agreed' to the sale to get him out of my house after over an hour as I had stuff to be getting on with. I then cancelled my order. Am I a bad person?

..or the kind of person who goes into hard sell mode at every opportunity over this only available today never to be repeated special offer so the potential customer just agrees to whatever you're trying to sell to shut you up and get some peace and quiet before going and buying the item somewhere else where they didn't get an annoying hard sell.

That depends. Yes, if I think I have been screwed. No, if I think that that is what I have paid for.

You shouldn't get upset or annoy by that to be honest. Chill man! Chill!

I used to do sales by the way so I get all sorts ... it's a probability game.

Why on earth would you ever consider Safestyle??
And yes you are a bad person, you're in your own home FFS, just tell them to get out or you'll release the hounds.

I once had Safestyle round to quote. They wouldn't quote unless husband and wife were available right there and then. I told them to do one as I only wanted a quote, not a sales patter.

Their lead generators still phone me every now & again - they get short shrift.

I didn't really but they knocked on the door when I was doing up my old house and needed a window reasonably quickly. Just wanted a price to compare but you can guess the rest!

having repeatedly told a double glazing salesman (Safestyle)

Wife called them in. Poor chap did his sales patter before I told him that I wouldn't be buying today, and would never make a large purchase without 3 quotes. He looked destroyed.
He gave me a quote and I said I'd give him a call, he said that the quote was only available for that day so I gave it back to him.

Yes, this sales 'technique' is a sure fire way not to get my business. Any decent salesman working for a decent company would be more than happy for you to go away and get other quotes.

I've been known to turn away customers who are too annoying, so it works both ways. One used the phrase "I'll put a thousand pounds cash in your hand and we can shake on it right now."

@bencooper I've had them get the chequebook out on the desk before when a buyer was 'serious about doing business'... <sigh>

.. who will ring me and persist in offering quotes and prices despite me saying I'm not interested. The sort of person who sounds affronted when I say I am happy with my current supplier and don't really want to change.

Don't get me started on Safestyle. Lying charlatan bastards. Quality of product leaves a lot to be desired too.

Yes. I try to explain that any saving they offer will be less than my hourly rate for the time taken to switch to whatever service they're offering. Occasionally they get it.

"You're obviously new in business and struggling - I know what that's like so I'm doing you a favour, money in your hand. You're not going to get a better sale this week!"

😀

I could have made £400 on that bike, but he was such a twunt it was worth that much to turn him down.

having watched him 'ring his boss' a couple of times to sweeten the deal

He didn't use his own phone did he? !

The rule is to ask to use your own phone at your cost (probably to some number they profit off), and then he hands the phone to you. The "boss" is a mate down the pub.

I went through all this with one company for a laugh after reading up on all the tricks. I ticked them off one by one.
