You took an angle grinder to a thousand quid bonnet AND you’ve got a sauna? WCA, you go up in my estimation every episode 👍

The bonnet was much less than £1000 after being restyled by a DHL lorry.

The sauna and hot tub is something I knocked up myself to help me medically. I knackered my ankle so struggle with walking and end up with tight and twisted muscles. Sitting in the tub and then the sauna most evenings relieves the tension allowing me to continue to arse about the next day.

There is no way I could afford to get one built and installed by someone else.

If you watched the last episode then I think I mentioned that I am doing the bumper/airdam next.

It needs to be quite deep to cover the 911 radiators and other bits so I got my friendly free AI image generator to produce some options. What do you reckon?

I am currently thinking that I will mostly do the left hand one but with the bumper and spots fromt he right hand picture.

Thoughts? Alternative images?

Datsun 240z front end was the first thing that popped into my head
Could you not reverse the sweep so the lower air dam sits more vertical?
Some black grills under the headlights could look purposeful

Good call. A quick google shows various options and the more vertical dam is a LOT easier to mold that the V in the pictures above which will probably cause mechanical grab when trying to free the part from the mold.

I am now thinking the bumper from the right but the side lights and more angled corner on the air vent from the left. The dam then drops straight down with a little forward sweep and a small front splitter. Vents cut into the dam for the radiator feeds.

Following advice from this thread and the one about aero undertrays, the front air dam is almost complete and you can watch the thrilling build video here first :

Any feedback on these videos?

Things have slowed a little as the weather is either too cold for glass/resin work I need to do, too rainy for the bonnet styling I want to do, or both. I was hoping to get the next episode out next weekend but it is looking unlikely.

I am trying to decide whether it is best to finish the airdam plug, make a mold and pop out a panel that I can then use to align the rest against

or

finish the airdam plug and then crack on with the bonnet and wings before making any moulds and panels.

To much time thinking and watching the rain I guess.

It’s certainly coming along 👍. I can’t help worry though that even a mild ‘bump’ to the front is going to undo all your hard work. WCA, is your red car (BMW?) a similar build?

Don't forget that everything you see so far is just the plug over which I will make moulds and it is from these molds that I will take the panels. All this foam I am pissing about with is going to be junked. This will leave me with a number of strong carbon fibre body panels mounted securely to the car (in ways I have yet to discover) and should they get damaged in a smash, I will have the molds ready and waiting to make new ones.

Yeas, the red cart (BMW Z300S Barchetta) is a similar construction, just in glass fibre instead of carbon fibre. It is for sale to pay for this project if you want it.

Yeah, I woke up this morning with the certain realisation that what was needed was an undertray that the airdam could bolt to. This would hold that in place and I could also then build a proper support structure for the front wings while I build the plug.

The challenge with the under tray is calculating the aerodynamic loads and the cooling requirements with venting for the radiator exits while not impinging on the brake ducts. I have spent the entire time since waking doing the maths required and calculating the load spread based on a carbon Kevlar shell over a foam core shaped to create low pressure under the front axle.

I think Version 0.073 is just about perfect. Now to order the materials

Friday was a write off as a day with weather.

Saturday I was in London for a family birthday so no progress made.

Sunday I just needed to fit a couple of Rivnuts so I had something to bolts the planned undertray to. Easy except that requires a 13mm metal bit and the largest I could find was 11mm. I was tempted to just wiggle it about i bit but decided not to as I wanted the rivnut to be held tight so popped down to Screwfix to get the 13mm bit. Then I remembered that every shop has to shut because a couple of millennium ago a supposedly dead bloke was found to have been less dead than expected so progress on the car.

Monday I finally get the drill bit and make nice snug holes for the rivnuts and as I pull the tool tight on the first one...

Well I think the picture shows why there was no progress on the car today.

Why did you not fix the tool?

Also, you can use an impact driver to pull the rivnut in

Now your friday night is complete. Here is the latest episode completed after working morning and night to achieve, well, doesn't actually look like that much but I am a whole lot further forward than I was and I get to use 3M Glass Baubles to make body filler - stay to the end to see how that works out.

Just got out the garage after 2.5 hours of more mixing and filling. About 1/3rd of the airdam now has filler on it and I am waiting for it to dry. I mixed this lot much stiffer and it was both a pig to get properly mixed in and harder to apply as it dragged and puckered rather than flowing on like icing. I am thinking that after I finish this base layer and sand down ready for the next, I will mix the top layer to a similar consistency as you see in that video.

Anyway, of to set up the art exhibition now.

This week's Shed and Buried, Classic Cars might be right up your street. E type Jag rusty shell on a 90s BMW chassis. Series 1 episode 8, probably repeated on Quest sometime.

I'm very familiar with that E-type. It was built by the multi talented Mike Hill of Survivor Customs and I shot its first magazine feature 8 or 9 years ago.

Bruce - That was one of my options but it makes it quite a bluff front.

I 'think' I have decided to keep the air dam shape as it is but cut 6 inches out of each side to pull the whole front of it backwards. This will just mean reshaping the side parts and possibly cutting and refinishing the flat floor. I am leaving the floor alone for the moment while I work on the bonnet to get that shaped and aligned. This will let me see just how far I can move everything backwards and then decide if the flat floor is left cutting forward like a race car splitter or is cut to fit.

It is getting close to actually having the body plug complete. Probably just another 72,000 hours of sanding to go.

Thanks for the support. I will keep flagging it up on here then.

I just got in from working on the Left Wing (to ensure political balance) and am really pleased by my 3rd attempt at a symetircalizer which has helps a lot with the initial shaping.

it has a charm the more polished channels just don’t have - It has taken me years to rub away the 'polished' style to reveal the charming incompetence 🙂

For political balance and a bit of conspiracy click bait, I have called this one Left wing and Hacking. Basically, I made the left wing, realise the front was too wide for the wheel arches and widening the track of the car properly was £££ so hac ked everything apart and rebuilt the airdam and both front wings.

It has been a very dusty week of sanding and shaping and I didn't get in from the garage until nearly 11pm last night which is why the video release is delayed until now.

Enjoy, like, subscribe and comment please, or don't

I just ran out of the glass baubles for making the epoxy filler I am using. So what, I can order some more.

Postage is a bit steep, I might as well order the fibre glass, resin and gel coat I will use to make the moulds at the same time. Quickly add the extra items and get to the checkout.

Just over £1,000 with the VAT and delivery!!!!

I am having a 'Super Special Art Sale this weekend" Any painting from NicksArtStuff.com is now just £100 delivered (UK Mainland).  Go have a look and PM me if you are interested.

This project is on hold until I sell at least 5 of them so I will spend tomorrow at the Winchester Market I think.

I have no idea why you are spending time and money absolutely butchering the front wings on that car. No offense, it looks like an f40 bodykit  on an MR2 in reverse

No worries and no offense taken. The original parts are stored in the attic so it can be reversed if required.

There is no rational reason for this other than I thinkt he 911 front end looks a bit crap since the 996 where they tried to combine the distinctive round lights at the end of the front wing with the tapered back front end. It wasn't just the fried egg 996, it applies to the 997, 991 and 992. Just for the record, I didn't like the headlights on the Muira either. If you have basically round headlights then they look better more vertical and if you want head lights merged into a sleek, flat nose then use a better shape.

I like the front end styling of the Citroen DS but although the car was 30 years ahead of it's time, that was 70 years ago. This means you get 70 year old cars with 40 year old relevance and an engine from a pre-war car because Citroen ran out of money to develop the engine they wanted.

I am doing this fo r the fun of learning the process and overcoming the challenges and at the end of it I get a 'distinctive' car. I am happy for people not to like or understand it as it is built for me and not them. I am also happy for people to like it. There is not much I can do to change the way other people think, so I don't try.

Feel free to comment on this thread or the YT channel with questions, comments or condemnation.

Actually, now it's been shrunk it doesn't look too bad .
The Porsche is quite a small car to start with so I suppose it's easy to get the panels oversized, then cut them back.

The clown insulting you, tbh sounds like he's a bit jealous of your work

.

Adds: when sanding, maybe take a leaf out of 'fairing' in boat building. Which is to use a long board of about 6mm ply or mdf with the sandpaper stuck to it. It prevents low spots from forming if you sand one area more than another and the length of the board(say 12"-18") as it bridges any low spots taking off the high spots only.

.

Much like a No7 or No8 handplane. Same principle.

You might be (the only one) excited by the next episode where i do a lot of sanding. I bought a long board sanding block which i stick my sand paper to when trying to get the wing straight. I use epoxy and glad baubles to form a fairing paste, and the whole process is called 'fairing'. Taken from the boat building world to describe making a smooth straight and flat surface when it really is a complex compound curved surface, just without ripples it sharp edges.

I put the video out on Friday evening as I was spending Saturday hosting a birthday BBQ for MrsWCA and then Sunday I had an all day British Cycling Coaching assessment course.  I did manage to get a couple of hours to sand the left wing and slap some gloop onto the bonnet so hopefully will get them ready for primer during the mornings and evenings this week.

Bonnet with gloop

I still haven't got to primer yet, but I have got close enough to order some for delivery next week. My plan is to complete the filling and sanding today - just finished an hour down the garage before posting this - but I have planned to do that for the last 4 weeks. Sanding is tedious and getting the perfect finish is harder than I thought.

I decide to share /pontificate about my learnings so far about filling and sanding a car. Probably not advice or how to, but might help if you are thinking of wrecking a Porsche, I mean trying a bit of bodywork.

Comments welcome

One more tip that didn't make the edit (because I have only just done it) is to watch out for sharp edges on the filler when hand sanding with the long block. The skin of your knuckle might only just glance against the filler but it can be as sharp as a knife and by the end of the sanding stroke, blood will be everywhere.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/snUkZuixaQrmp1wF8

ow

Temporary dressed applied to stem the bleeding. I will give it 30 minutes to calm down and then check if it just sliced the skin, or went deeper in.

No, have a look at the shot of the front wing viewed from behind. It was about 4 inches out from the wheel. This wasn't as apparent with the wheels hanging down when it was on the ramp. Shortening the nose is just a bonus as I had to cut up the wing anyway.

The trouble is that once you cut one part to make it narrower it knocks all the proportions out on the rest of it. The other thing I didn't like with the car on the ground was how big the headlights were in proportion to the rest of the front so I am doing these at the same time. At least now I can make the frame to hold the headlights first as I know where the front wing will be.

Total pain in the arse I grant you, but should give a better end result. I know if I left  the length or lights I would never be able to look at the car without them annoying me.

Have you got cad or anything ?

If you consider starting over, a template from a series of flat boards, each a section if you know what i mean. Glued them together and then filed to remove the edges to create a rounded curved shape.

Yes I know, but sometimes you have to just chuck effort 1 into a corner, shout **** and start over.

One step forward, two steps back, but you’re keeping it positive WCA, well done.

Always build a prototype, it is easier to explain to the boss why that is in the bin.

The curves are all in multiple directions which makes creating them from flat pieces really difficult. The YT experts often make a shape from loss of slices of plywood but i don't have a big saw and i need to fit them over the actual carn which is an awkward shape.

No real benefit to doing it in CAD as i have no way of transferring that into the physical world. The quick sketch i did with approximate dimensions looked fine.

I think i am doing it the right way, slowly but the right way. The only mistake i made was one of stylistic judgement regarding the width of the wheel arch. Pretty much the rest of the rework is being done because i might as well do it while the wing is being cut up.

Feeling a bit better and have been down the garage since 7am working on the headlight support frame. Just back for more coffee

The first bit of the headlight frame is sitting waiting for the carbon fibre to harden and I hope to get it finished tomorrow, then I can get the bloody front wing proportions sorts, followed by more filler and sanding...

Also, seems that YT prefers disaster movies.

For anyone a bit late to the party, I am adding some Catch Up Compilation videos which just slam about 5 episodes into a single 30 minute clip.

There will be more today as fast as my poor computer can cope, taking you up to the latest episode.

The main reason I am doing this is that I am playing with carbon fibre construction for the headlight frame right now and I wanted to look back at what I did before. It takes ages with all the little episodes to find what I wanted.

I have been waiting for 2 weeks for some wheel spacers to push the front wheels out a bit. Until I get those I cannot get the wing shape right. Until I do those I cannot get the replacement air dam. Until I get that I cannot finish the bonnet.....

While I have been waiting I made the proper headlight mounting brackets out of carbon fibre. I believe these are the pieces that will remain on the final car so they had to be right, which is a challenge when you don't know what right looks like.

I wasn't going to release the video until later this week when I had carefully shaped the headlight brackets but the man finally delivered the wheel spacers while I was doing a sneaky hours work during my lunchtime so I just when with what I had recorded.

Enjoy. Please add comments etc as all feedback is always welcome.

Is that due to the law stating(I think) that the wheels cant stick out beyond the arches ?

No, theses are TUV approved for safety and the Porsche wheels are inset by about 15mm to allow snow chains to be fitted without extending out too far. As long as I don't use snow chains then I am fine.

The delay was caused by the 1st supplier not stocking the items on their website and not being able to get them from the manufacturer. Then the 2nd supplier had the wrong colour shown on the website so paused my order and sent me an email confirming I wanted to continue. Unfortunately that went into the 'promotions' email bin and I didn't see it for a few days. They responded quickly when I confirmed the colour was fine.

It is frustrating because I have now lost the light evenings so everything takes longer because I have a shorter working window. I was planning on doing the CF work in the garage when it was too dark to work on the bodywork.

This video is a landmark episode as I both listen to feedback on the video style and also make* that last of the bodywork components. The release is a bit close to the last one but most of this was filmed during my weeks leave as well and I know you simply can't wait for the latest dose of video boredom.

The listen to feedback bit is true, I was told to make the videos with more clips showing me hands on with the tasks rather than jumping to the end result. Please let me know if this is an improvement, worse, or no different. Do you like the videos a bit longer, like this one, or were the 5-6 minute clips better?

I think this is only about 11 minutes so tell me what you think the right duration is.

*Please note that I said 'make' and not 'complete'
