Browsing some posh coffee sites I came across this - surely for the coffee fan who worries that their coffee process just doesn't include enough faff.
"The roaster is artisan compatible"
It has a setting for "less experienced roasters"
It has not only "very quiet roasting" but also "very consistent and precise roasting"
Anyone here a roaster?
Hah, nope, it's likely you'd end up with more bad than good coffee I reckon. Also, a hive roaster allows you to burn beans and stink out the house for a lot less!
Came for the fnar - left disappointed.
Been called an absolute roaster many times in Scotland. Now you mention it, we were never talking about coffee tho... 🤔
Mental, I used a popcorn maker to roast coffee (£15) it was pretty decent, then realised I couldn’t be arsed.
250g!
It has a fair amount of control technology but that’s a bit overboard for a 250g capacity.
I’ve an older version of the Behmor roaster from Hasbean. I was given it as a present many years ago. Works well. Playing with roast profiles on the same green beans can produce some interesting differences.
I bet 99% will just use the mellow bird's setting
I've "roasted" before, me and a mate at an old job all liked a coffee and decided to buy 5kg of beans and each try different DIY methods at home.
IIRC Dave had some success with one of those cheapy popcorn makers (on an extension cord in his garden), and I did ok by assigning an old pan (with a lid) to coffee roasting use only and just doing a handful at a time on a camping stove, again outside. We both drew comments from our respective spouses.
The trick is to keep the beans moving (hence all the proper kit involves tumblers or turntables) and figure out a way to deal with the smoke (going outside works).
You are just trying to brown them and get them to start giving out oil, too long on any one side (literally a few seconds) and you burn that bean. Then you need to let them sit for at least a day or so.
It's fun, but quite a time consuming hobby when you can just go and buy all varieties of roasted beans for pretty affordable prices...
Looking at that I could knock up some sort of rotisserie and stick it in front of my nans leccy fire! 🙂
And now my FB feed is throwing coffee roasters at me

Came to check for this. Not disappointed.
Get yer hedge cut.
When I were a lad (1960's) there was a coffee and tea shop in Beckenham (posh S. London suburb*) High Street that had a roasting drum whirring away in the front window. I don't know if it was only for show, but the smell was rather nice. When you bought ground coffee they ground it there and then for you. Maybe back in those days if you wanted to sell decent coffee you had to do it all yourself, you don't hear of retailers roasting on the premises much now.
*We didn't live there.
I'm a recovering roaster.
Started with a pop corn maker, eventually killed that by flicking the switch too much trying to control the roast profile 😂
Moved on to a hot air gun (paint stripper type thing) in an old cast iron saucepan. I used to buy large batches of green beans from Bella Barista IIRC, maybe 100 quid a pop but for that you'd get a fair quantity of different beans.
These days I have three kids, no time, and drink preground "whatever is cheap" 🤷♂️
