Bread with poppy seeds? Have decided it’s a glitter-bomb prank played by frustrated supermarket bakers.

like opening a bag of peppercorns and them spraying everywhere, except now for giants.

Who plays tricks on your shopping? I’ve got a bone to pick with those squeezy inverted rubber nipple things on Encona hot sauce (and other saucers). Squeeze gently...nothing. Squeeze a little harder...nothing. Squeeze just a tad... SPLARP half a bottle of tongue-death now all over my perfect scrambled eggs. The last 2 eggs. ****ers.

You don't make your own artisanal sourdough? How frightful.

It’s a ‘white bloomer’. I grab a few loaves of whatever’s 25p at the end of the day and freeze them at home. Maybe that’s a sin but it generally works for us. Like tombola. I can cook flatbreads though.

Love the nutty crunch of poppy seeds on bread. So much so, that after I've toasted and buttered a thick wedge of it, I will tip any escapees that have gathered in the cellophane wrapper over the melted butter.

What is wrong with you?

Visiting relatives in Germany as a youngster, one of my best memories is fresh, crispy, still warm poppy seed rolls for breakfast with rich, creamy unsalted butter.

Simple pleasures.

Seriously I just made toast* and they taste of nothing.

Nutty crunch?

You’re having a laugh. I just ate that same bread that made this toast and it tastes of exactly nothing. And it has the near-exact golden tooth-shattering, dehumidifying characteristics of a Swedish Krisproll. Shitebread.

Even my scrambled egg rebelled. It’s an disaster. I know this sounds like 1st World problems but the distraction/mock-pathos stops me thinking about the big real things that are happening.

@paton ye gods the plot thickens.

So if I gob all the leftover poppy seeds in the bag and lick them off the floor and works surfaces will it all feel better?

(Lick lick lick lick lick) 🙃😛😋🤪

Yeah, they're no good if you're mincing about trying to add sauce a drop at a time, great for the fully committed strafing skoosh at speed though!

ketchup and mayo in 'squeezy' bottles. Utter rubbish. Give me a jar any day.

Yeah, they’re no good if you’re mincing about trying to add sauce a drop at a time,

Half a teaspoon of habanero sauce on egg is correct and really quite heavenly-tasting. Any more and egg = destroyed. What kind of person splooshes hot sauce all over good food?? I know the answer to that. And they ride this bike:

Don’t get me wrong, I like a fiery curry or chilli. Stupid hot ones. But eggs is eggs. Kebab OTOH? Pass the skweeesh

You’re having a laugh. I just ate that same bread that made this toast and it tastes of exactly nothing.

Now poppy seeds are good but they're not magic. They won't make shite bread taste good, but that's not the poppy seeds fault #poppyseedsareinnocent

But if you can't taste the actual seeds, either quit smoking or get a Covid test! 😉

It will, guaranteed 100% 👍 Just get someone to video you doing that and post it here, as that will also make us all feel better. Win win.

It’s 12:52… late breakfast

I’ll eat toast or sarnie with whatever, either at 2-3am or lunchtime. Not usually a breakfast sort unless camping/bike-packing or on FRYUP DAY when brunch become a Saturday focal point. Maybe an apple in the weekdays. Are you taking notes? 😜

But if you can’t taste the actual seeds, either quit smoking or get a Covid test!

I did quit smoking, 2018. I think the taste thing is being seriosuly overweight since quitting smoking and having to all but stop cycling (thru injury)

When I’ve lost weight before, my taste buds seem to ‘heal’. Science!

^ I can taste stuff BTW, just at a lower resolution than I remember, which seems to filter out things like poppy seeds (which I do possibly vaguely remember vaguely tasting many years ago)

Talking of which, it took me twenty minutes to try and clean up from lunch, but with help of a torch I can still see the little bastards absolutely everywhere.

Strangely comforting to think that when we are done with this place, long gone/dead and buried etc...future tenants will be finding and cleaning little black seeds from the nooks and crannies in their kitchen.

Sort of a handover/keep the flame alive sort of thing?

A baton passed.

You had a test recently?

I agree. Poppy seeds on the outside of bread are a pointless annoying mess. Inside better. I also had an angry squeezy nipple incident yesterday. 1st squeeze of the ketchup aiming at the burger bun and it just spattered all over floor and work top, hardly any on the bun 😖

@Simon_Semtex, No, not tested, but thanks for the concern/advice. I can taste things fine. Just not the subtle frequencies. It’s a little blunted. I noticed about 9 years ago when fasting and losing weight that my sense of taste markedly increased/was enhanced. Then a few years later I piled weight back on. Noticed taste reduced. Then quit smoking and it improved more, then lost some weight and same again. If I eat loads of cheap carbs and sugary foods as has been the case during the last year it has an effect on tastebuds.

So last year I decided to cross-check my findings to see if it was ‘ a thing’. Turns out it is!

It’s a fact that people with obesity tend to lose their sense of taste. However, until now, researchers had few clues as to how this happens, on a molecular level.
