Looking after my nephews tonight, 4 & 7, and will at some point be watching a film. Rather than watching any of the usual stuff, like Pixar/Disney animation, I want to put something fantasy/adventure/swashbuckly on.

Is there anything modern like this? As it seems kids films are either animations, or anything like I am after is a bit too mature...12/12A.

Any ideas? As would love for there to be something out there which combined the fantasy type stuff of the films I remember from the 80s, with the la-de-daa CGI effects we have now.

I believe Star Wars is popular among the younger generation.

Why does it have to be modern?
Show 'em an older film - they'll still enjoy it.

Star wars

Pirates - kids loved it i endured it - its not awful just not great
Doctor who on catch up?
Clash if the titans - not seen the new one - now not even sure there is a new one
Merlin - think there is a kids version of that is watchable
Despicable me - ok its not exactly fantasy
I cannot think of anything new either

I watched old stuff with mine tbh as new stuff is just Disney/pixaar type stuff.

Stardust is a good call, as long as you're happy to explain why De Niro is a "woopsie". I was pleasantly surprised by it. Also did Avengers Assemble with kids at 7 & 5 (even though rated 12 effectively A under the scheme I grew up with).

Goonies goes down really well with my kids.

Indiana Jones was introduced to them at Xmas, although we skipped Temple of Doom due to the removal of beating hearts.

Thor was well received. Captain America less so. Iron Man 1 & 3 went down well.

Star Wars Movies, did well.

Holes was popular.

Transformers did OK as well.

Cuz I have shown them all my favourites from growing up, but am not up to date on anything after 1995-ish 8)

I was blown away by it, I was expecting some utter dross, didn't know De Niro was in it. It was a real gem, almost Gilliam-esque.

Stardust looks a good shout. Bit worried it might be a bit much for the youngest. I have seen it, but don't remember anything so might have to grab it and have a quick scan through.

Yeah I was shocked how good it is too then even more so when I found out who wrote it. I reckon I might put it on later for the kids.

Do you mean Gaimans original story or who adapted it for screen? (Mrs Jonathon Ross & Matthew vaughan). Jane Goldmsith, (Mrs Ross) has done some good stuff, Kickass was a good adaption, probably not suitable for a 4 & 7 year old though.

Stardust is an excellent film. A real gem.

My two enjoyed The Last Airbender, but the highlight of that film was lines like "I could tell at once that you were a bender".

Goonies is a good call, but I notice that's a 12.

Polar Express maybe?

Stardust is great. I also really liked Enchanted, but that might because I fancy Amy Adams

I love stardust. As well as rdn's 'woopsie' moment, I like when Michelle Pfeiffer's magic enhanced dress circle descend back into being stalls 😉

And the kung fu guardian of the wall.

Plenty to watch for the grown ups too.

Enchanted was good.
Super 8, but that might be a little jumpy for younger ones.
Avenger assemble
Pirates of the Caribbean
101 Dalmatians. The one with Glenn Close
Epic

Avoid the new clash of the titans stick with the originals, much more soul.

Enchanted is a good shout as is stardust.

Might be worth checking out the following:

The brothers Grimm (check suitability)
Coraline
Mirrormask
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
City Of Ember
Hugo
