[Closed] Are Shimano and SRAM blocking sales to UK from EU?

After spending a fun hour or two trying to track down a replacement cassette for one of my bikes I started to notice that a good number of the EU bike stores seem to be specifically flagging up the fact that they can't ship their Shimano and SRAM parts to the UK.

Bike Inn UK Shipping Block Notice

Bike 24 UK Shipping Status

Does anyone know anything more about this? Is it a real block by Shimano and SRAM, and if it is is it something that is likely to be a permanent or something that is only temporary while everyone is short on bits?

No, it's a "benefit" of  the B word.

Almost certainly a policy, and permanent. Interestingly of course chiggle is both inside the EU and the UK via Chain reaction, so I expect they are the exception.

I got a SRAM chainring from BikeInn a month or so ago, but not sure if it's changed.

Maybe this is a brand new thing though?

I got a Shimano mech from Germany a few weeks back.

Strange that Shimano and Sram would do it at the same time though. Get your tinfoil hats on.

Bear in mind, we're still not in 'full' Brexit, that's a couple of months away yet. Could well be that they're gearing* up for when that hits so they don't have any outstanding orders to fulfil.

Of course, in Moggworld this will be a fantastic opportunity for all our great British groupset manufacturers. Are we learning yet?

(* - sorry)

More power to the likes of wiggle to gouge us. 🙄

I'd imagine it's related to warranty maybe?

Yeah, at first I thought nowt to do with Brexit, but I believe it wouldn't have been legal to restrict trade from other EU states before.

So yep, possibly another delightful benefit of the gift that keeps giving.

I wouldn't have thought that they could prevent EU countries from selling to anyone.

I was looking at some DT E 532 rims on Bike Inn, and they've recently disappeared too. They still show as available if you change location to another country.

I wouldn’t have thought that they could force EU countries to sell to anyone. (Whoever "they" are.)

Still. The time for "thought" was six years ago, it's a bit late now.

It's what 'the people' wanted. Imagine for yourselves what I substitute in place of 'people;' in this sentence.

Still this is about bike chains and cassettes, not politics right?

A B-screwed adjustment then.

SRAM do a worldwide warranty so any shop that do SRAM can be used for warranty claims (the shop may charge labour costs), so unlikely to be due to warranty concerns.

Northern Ireland is still in the UK so if it were geo-blocking then they wouldn't ship there either. Definitely looks import duty / tax related to me.

Probably best not to be bitter when it was a democratic choice. That being said my comments were nothing to do with the UK leaving the EU.

It’s definitely not related to tax or import duty issues as both shops will quite happily ship stuff from other manufacturers to the UK. Suspect it is related to geofencing terms written into sales contracts which were unenforceable when we were in the single market but are fair game for companies now we’re out. Just a shame to see the big S’s chasing this now. Guess now might be the time to put my orders in before that supply route dries up. 😢

Or then UK shops are complaining about the deals still possible and they have listened to their UK dealers and acted...

Not following things on here like I used to ...are the STW brexiteers still happy with all the benefits it keeps on giving or are they finally seeing the reality?

Most of them have pissed off to enjoy the sunlit uplands, I think. Not safe here in the echo chamber.

As we were repeatedly told that they new exactly what they were voting for, I'm sure they took care to stockpile plenty of Big S components prior to June 2016. Shame that they're not still here so we could buy some bits off of them.

The most fervent ones have gone or got a new login and avoid the subject. Some stay off the topic. A couple have admitted that they voted Brexit but wouldn't do so with hindsight. There are a couple of idealists with politics that blind them to pragmatism who haven't changed their minds and blame anything/anyone except Brexit for the consequences of Brexit.

Shimano and SRAM stop EU and UK stores selling to North America. along with mavic and some others. some EU and UK retailers will sell to these brands to NA. I’d wondered if it was online only retailers who were barred.

Or then UK shops are complaining about the deals still possible and they have listened to their UK dealers and acted…

this would be my guess.

Komrads, I forward the motion that we write a strongly worded pleading letter to the Great Leader Ursula Von Der Leyen, begging her to use her EU Army to return these gammon islands to the Empire, so that we can once again buy cheap cassettes from Rosebikes

Can we please not turn this into another brexit thread? Or it already too late?

No grey market imports for you then, you’ll have to pay the gold price.
