I can remember my parents having one in the 70s and it used to fascinate me.
I bought one in my 20s and it had the same effect on me.
Whilst clearing out the house last week we discovered the one from my 20s, but it had no base to it for some reason (my wife inexplicably chucks out lots of things at times).
I won a second hand base on ebay, but then discovered that the wax in the glass bulb had separated and try as much as I could I was unable to mix the high and low density waxes back together.
My children were quite excited after me finding the old glass bulb and then winning the base for it, but then the disappointment set in when it didn't work.
Mathmos do a replacement glass bulb for 23.95 delivered, doesn't seem too bad for hours of fun staring at coloured blobs of wax rising and falling does it?
They are cool.
Cooler than cool!
They tend to be pretty darn hot from my memory.
But I too spent much of my teenage year years staring at one, eating coco pops, listening to the white album. draw your own conclusions.
waaaaay cool
You can get a new one for that price?
I love my lava lamp, it is purple and yellow and very cool 8)
They havent featured in the latest apple advert, so they're still cool!
Hmm, I just found one after a serious tidying session. I used to love it but am having the same dilemma 🙂
Anyone want to buy one 😉

What colour is it?
My son now has heart sat on a blue liquid and red wax one 😉
Sorry Ho Hum, it's clear liquid and dark red wax
Oops. My first double. I swear it's never happened before!
My kids have one as their night light, they love it; if the kidz say it's cool then it must be
They may not be fashionable, but they will always be cool.
They are cool. They make fab night lights if you can find a small one.
I found a shop in Rotterdam selling them, very cool moden versions, and uber cool retro ones. Sadly, was in too much of a loaded down rush to get one.

I've had a Mathmos one for about twenty years now, I still use it on a fairly regular basis.
There was a Viz Top Tips that went something along the lines of:
'Recreate the visual effects of a lava lamp by balancing your scrotum on a shining torch'
Ha Ha Love tha Top Tip
I can't face the thought of one after being told the story of a neighbours 'friend' getting herself off on one.
