Fridge was working completely fine then suddenly completely lifeless. No bad running prior, no bang/smoke/flames/sounds of grinding gears (at least while we were present) Changed the fuse to no avail, but other than that it didn't give any clues before it went.

Are there any diy tests and fixes to try? Or are there no user serviceable parts. Not worried about having to replace it, its prob 10 years old, but a shame to bin it without at least trying something first.

Is it a combined fridge freezer ?

Our fridge part stopepd working - what happened was the vent between the freezer and the fridge was iced up so no cold air could get to the fridge.

Also check your drain at the back of fridge is clear and clean. - may need to take out the drain tray and empty it.

Obvious question; have you google'd the make and model? It may well be a known fault with a known remedy.

Its a fridge only, no ice box.

Its silent/dead rather than just ineffectual.

Does the light still come on?

Its a Hotpoint 'Iced Diamond' - unfortunately they've put that name on 40 years worth of fridges and freezers and despite having all sorts of technical data labels on the back - like the type and quantity of refrigerant- theres no actual model identifier to be seen anywhere.

Thats a good question - the bulb wasn't working to begin with so I don't currently have that clue. I'll pop the bulb out to see if I can easily swap in a replacement into test. I've got a little mains tester pen thingy over at my workshop so I could check to see if theres power going to the bulb holder.

Nothing blocked or needing emptying at the back.

It looks live a system of very few part - non of which seem to be likely to respond to either gaffer tape or a hammer.

It'd be worth checking the thermostat... our Hotpoint recently stopped working and after working through the wiring with a multimeter found that the thermostat wasn't coming on at all.

Getting to the thermostat can be fun, depending on where the temp adjust dial is, ours was behind the plastic strip above the fridge compartment, where the door hinge can be adjusted. Others are inside the compartment itself. They are all usually get-able though I believe.

Cheapest place for a replacement was from the Hotpoint website itself too... which surprised me!

I'll check that theres power to the light and if there is investigate the thermostat then. The fun bit will be identifying the correct replacement as not having a model-identifier seems to be common with hotpoint - they put it on a little sticker on the underside of the door frame which just peels off.

Ha, I can attest to that. I have an "Iced Diamond 40" which is at a rough guess at least 35 years old. It's probably due for retirement soon.

Time for both of us to move to houses with newer fridges 🙂

You do know that fridges can be changed independently of houses, don't you? 😉

Check the fridge motor overload , it is a small cheap component,
you should be able to remove it and test it for continuity - replace if
no continuity.
You can bypass it to test if the motor still runs - just make sure you have the correct rating fuse in the plug and only switch it on long enough to see if the motor runs - if it does it is most likely the overload need replacing.
Common 5 quid fault that needlessly creates landfill.

Edit - watch out for the capacitor!

You should get your missus a new fridge for Christmas. Just wait to see her face light up when she opens it.

Then you'll be able to spend Boxing Day sitting and chilling.

🙂

put a fresh bulb in and it lights up so I guess the thermostat is the next check, I'll dig it out and see if the thermostat itself has a serial number on it to aid sourcing a replacement, then I guess its the overload protector to test.

Beyond that the balaance of arsed-ness and competence versus replacement cost and convenient access to chilled beverages begins to swing in favour of a trip to currys.

A big tool is prerequisite to fixing a fridge according to atleast one documentary I've seen, maybe you're just not blessed in the tool box department?
