I’ve come the conclusion that I’m a bit of a wimp and can’t cope with being cold!
I’ve got a couple of pairs of Endura 260 thermal long bibs and they aren’t warm enough for me. Before I start looking at wearing baggies or layering up with thermals etc… are there any brands of thermal bibs that are lots warmer than 5e Endura ones?
How old are your Endura ones? IME thermal tights lose their fleecy lining at wear points like knees, thighs over time. Sportful Total Comfort have been good for me - double layer across the thighs where it really matters, but still stretchy, not clammy as I’ve found with many tights with a windproof layer
I'd recommend that you use thermal bib tights without a chamios and wear them over your normal bib shorts.
The benefits are:
- You get to wear your expensive and favourite bib shorts all year round.
- Bib tights without a chamios are a lot cheaper.
- When you get back home all filthy, you can just take off your outer tights outside and you'll still have your modesty intact. Much less mess IME.
- You'll have double layers over the areas that need it most.
Some folk don't like the extra straps but I hardly notice them.
Endura
My experience of Endura bib tights is not great. All sorts of poor design or specified materials mistakes. Like they were designed by a designer who doesn't ride bikes year round.
My Scott and Galibier ones are much better fit, warmer and fewer niggles or rubs.
I would also say that wearing good bibs under longs is also going to be better - a second layer of fabric around butt and crotch is a good thing.
No, like fleece jackets some use warmer, thicker fabrics. Sometimes they give info. g/m2, maybe denier or weight or just words (like winter or "deep winter").

Windproofing bits can help a lot too.

My go to was always DHB from wiggle if you are brave. Lusso have also been good. I'd probably check out galibier. No idea on tights but most other things I have from them are spot on.

Are all thermal bibs created equal?
Nope, fabric choice makes a big difference.
I have some Rapha Pro Team Winter Bib Tights which are the same thickness as other ones, but way warmer...

That's where the £12m went... 🙃
my wife once bought me some pearl izumi AmFib winter tights. I was a bit unsure until I tried them but now I live in them all winter, they are super toasty. Never tried the Endura 5e so can't make a direct comparison but I'm not sure I would want anything warmer the the AmFibs
Wot didnthurt said, for me , with some bib tights, the main problem was pad position more than the material,so I ended up unstitching the pad and using shorts underneath.
I've got several pairs of these. They're really good.

I've used Castelli sorpasso for years, always been happy with them.
My favourite winter bibs have Windstopper panels at the front. I've had them for years and really need replaced.
My absolute warmest bibs are Endura Stealth (no longer available). I have the lined and unlined version. Now they really are toasty!!

This, but I usually just wear MTB liner shorts underneath rather than bibshorts.
My warmest biblongs are Lusso MaxRepel.
Lovely and warm, nice high back and a degree of water repellency. Reasonably priced too. Absolutely no need to spend more.
Their range and model names may have changed now though.
