My folks' laptop has been dying on it's arse for years now and could do with being replaced by something.

They only really use it for web browsing, and prefer an actual keyboard for when they're booking their latest cruise or my dad is sending a complaint to the council about the dirtiness of the bin lorry (true story). A Chromebook, I think, sounds ideal as he already has a Gmail account and an Android tablet.

Are they all pretty much the same? If not, anything I should be looking for? What about printing? He likes to print things out occasionally.

They're much like any other laptop in that there are different screen sizes (with or without touchscreen), processors, varying amounts of RAM and storage etc... Any of them will do web browsing without any bother though.

One thing to definitely take note of is how long the device will receive updates for. My current one gets them until 2033, my previous one only had 4 years of updates when I bought it.

I have no idea about printing, I've not printed anything at home this century.

as above, check the Enf-of-life date. We for one from elekdirect

https://www.elekdirect.co.uk/

THey sell customer returns from AO, box maybe dodgy but the rest is fine and the prices are good. just get one that's the right size for your needs (we went from 11" screen to 17" and it's a bit unwieldy, truth be told) and has the right features - do you need a touchscreen etc etc

You could try putting Chrome OS Flex on their existing laptop which will basically turn it into a Chromebook so they can see if they get on with the idea.

Can run from an install USB or dual boot etc.

Printing: since Google cloud print ceased printing has become a pain. I have an Acer Chromebook,  a hp printer and hp 2 apps to enable printing.

It works most of the time.

I use a lennovo chromebook, which I find ideal for my low power type of use.

I picked it up s/h for £112.

Literally my only criticism of it is it's removable magnetic keyboard, which now has a dodgy connection in the ribbon between tablet and keyboard.

New keyboard is something like £60 and is a known fault. Get a hinged keyboard like a standard laptop is my advice.Other than that go for it.
