Ok, so with a loft conversion imminent I need to clear out what's up there including boxes of photos. In this digital age digital is the norm but it sort of feels wrong to bin photos of the kids, holidays etc but I do need to be ruthless. Please assure me that scanning and storing copies in various locations is safe? And the best kit to do it with please?
Thanks.

Always feels like I'm throwing a memory away when I bin a photograph. I weeded out a load of 'snaps' a few years ago, but still have a drawer full of pictures which inspire memories of times that, although important, tend to get lost under the weight of new experiences. Part of their value, though, is that they're a physical thing I can hold in my hand. Sentiment is a strange thing, indeed.

Remember the BBC Domesday project?.......I'd keep them.

Oh no - throwing out prints is a bad idea. Whenever I visit my parents I love looking through all the family albums.

Why not just bin the out of focus, badly exposed prints and make a few albums with the rest of them?

Also worth bearing in mind that every time you change a photograph's physical media, you'll lose quality (unless you're scanning the negatives with an Imacon drum scanner...).

i would keep them, but then i still get all my snaps printed off and put them in albums anyway 🙂
i keep my albums in boxes on top of my wardrobe, i have about 20 albums.
can you find somewhere else to store them?

Bin them all. The memories are in your head. When you're too far gone to remember them, the pictures will just frustrate you.

Scan the first 20 or so and then see how sick you get of getting them scanned properly...

Go for a ruthless cull and keep the best/fondest ones.

Keep the negatives as they hardly take up any room and then sort through the actual prints only keeping the best stuff.
