My phone contract has just finished and my brother has offered me his iPhone 3gs at a very good price and will likely go on a sim only deal to save some money each month. However, i'm concerned about iTunes etc as I know that in a year (or who knows) time I will not be able to afford an iPhone, more likely HTC/Samsung etc android offerings. How does iTunes work, I've heard they run on a different format to the usual mp3 offering I currently have stored on my C drive through media player.
If all your music is saved as .mp3 youll be fine, just make sure you set iTunes to save all new music as .mp3 too.
Itunes plays mp3 fine. If you are importing new songs then the default import i think is aac but you can change the default to mp3 if you prefer.
What about buying music through amazon, tune tribe, play etc, are you still able to do this? Are you able to use iTunes with android phones?
I believe so, looking at the dev site for supported media formats the AAC format is there. Apple sells un-DRM'd ones these days so they can play on any device. You would have to drag-and-drop to the device unless there's a software connector of some type.
Amazon sells un-DRM'ed MP3 so no issue there.
Don't buy films though as they will be DRM'ed to the teeth.

AAC/AAC+ are MPEG formats that lots of other devises will play. Sony/Nokia were never an issue, I guess Android is ok as its non-proprietary , unlike the ATRAC format Sony used to use for Minidisc and other stuff. Apple Lossless has just been released to all and sundry as a fully open format for anyone to use, like FLAC files, but will play natively on iDevises. Hopefully that will mean full CD quality downloads as well as 260Kb as currently sold. Amazon tracks go straight into iTunes no problem. I used to drag'n'drop tracks onto a MicroSD card and play them on my old Nokia and Sony K750i.
That is what I mean, in the past I have just dragged and dropped tracks onto my phone with no problems and the format has been compatible with phone, computer and mp3 player etc. I don't want to restrict myself in future and risk losing or corrupting my music by swapping/converting them etc.
If anyone else can offer any advice it would be much appreciated.
