Can any apple watch have any watch face? My partner likes the look of this face on the ultra...

Is it possible to have that face on the SE?

And is the always on display on the series 9 good or is the SE display fine?

Some faces are limited to certain editions of the watch.

Is there a smug face option?

There are two ultra specific faces and the one you show is one of them.

I can’t see that face in the options listed for my series 8 so would guess you won’t get it on the series 9 or the SE.

For the always on display, I do quite like it and miss it if I put the watch into low power mode.

I must admit I like that face shown above, but I’m damned if I’m forking out for a Watch Ultra to get it! At least, not without a lottery win.

For that money, I’d want it to have an easily replaceable battery.

I like the look of that watch face, but it shows everything my Garmin does - this isn't meant to big up the Garmin, just that the data and layout is familiar which is why I think it appeals.

i mean to be fair, it’s easy, any apple shop will do it, it’s just not cheap (just checked, £95 for an ultra).

refurb ultras are a lot closer to regular Apple Watch money, especially if you’re considering cell anyway. More than twice the battery life IME too, and much more usable for offline/online mapping (I use workoutdoors).

My wife bought me an Ultra as a surprise a few months ago, so I moved from using a Garmin Forerunner. I only used the Garmin when riding but the Apple watch is on my wrist whenever I'm out of the house, because it does much more than the Garmin - Apple pay, mapping and directions, etc - but also does the ride recording stuff better than the Garmin. I start Strava before I put my jacket on, leave the house and it's recording instantly. The Garmin watch would often take several miles to start recording, and occasionally would turn the recording off because it didn't detect activity. (One of the irritating things about the Apple watch is that it nags me to record a workout when I'm just walking/cycling somewhere, so at least I haven't forgotten to start Strava since I had it.)

The Apple watch also does an awful lot of stuff that's interesting but I don't use - eg blood oxygen, menstrual cycle tracking, ECG - and a few things that I've played around with, like remotely controlling the camera on my phone, and checking noise levels in gigs etc.

It's a nice thing. Expensive compared to a Garmin, but then I could easily spend more on an analogue watch. 😀

Modern gamin forerunners do apple pay and also track much better than older models. It's hard to see how apple could do that better TBH, it's always worked perfectly for me. Mine does blood oxygen too, for what that's worth (mildly amusing when you go to altitude, perhaps less so when you're dying of covid) Mine even does some mapping which can be useful (turn by turn for a long bike ride, I've only bothered a couple of times). Obviously apple does more still. But I've not been tempted to jump ship yet.

I admit I was slightly intrigued by this comment so had a quick google. They obviously don't do Apple Pay but you can of course add cards for contactless payment... though I really hope this list of compatible banks (below) is not exhaustive. Also read you have to enter a PIN on your watch every time or ever 24 h, hopefully that's outdated info, or sod that for a game of soldiers!

Cornèrcard: VISA
Curve: MASTERCARD
Danske Bank: MASTERCARD
FinecoBank: VISA
Genome: VISA
@timmys that list of compatible cards looks right.
Curve is the saviour as that is just a proxy for any other (non Amex) cards you link to it.
The pin every 24hrs is a thing, or at least was on my Fenix 6X Pro.

Apple watch = great smart watch with decent sport and activity features
Garmin = great activity and navigation tool with some smart watch features.

As my ultra marathon days are behind me, my Apple Watch (ironically) Ultra does me fine.

If your doing any workouts the best app is workoutdoors which will upload to Strava.

http://www.workoutdoors.net/

The developer is always here if you need any help.

Sorry I was using it as synonymous with contactless, I don't follow all the details....didn't realise that the apple bit was a particularly vital bit.
