Looking at a new Smar****ch for my wife. She currently has an Apple Watch series 4. Is the current SE (2022) a worthwhile upgrade, has anyone experience of both?

Ta!

S4 to S7 was worth it. much bigger screen for same footprint.

no idea what the SE is equivalent too.

This should tell you the differences:

SE basically lacks I think all the latest snazzy health monitors, and doesn't have the always-on display, so depends whether these are of interest or not.

Then isn’t the SE just a rebadged s4?

I thought the same as when I looked at upgrading from my 5 the SE didn't seem as good.

I picked up a mint 3 month old S5 SE for about £200 because I just wanted the basic functionality but with decent speed and screen. It's great at what it does, ie it tells the time, sends me notifications of everything I want to keep tabs on, and lets me call when away from phone. Fitness stuff is basic but I use my phone for that. I wouldn't want to pay the crazy prices for a full fat model. YMMV. From what I see, the new SE is a bit bigger and a bit faster.

FTR mine is nice and snappy - no lag at all.

I’ve just gone from a series 4 to an 8. Biggest difference is battery life and screen size. As others have said, no bigger footprint but noticeably bigger screen. I didn’t even know it was bigger as it was a gift and as soon as it loaded up I said ‘blimey that’s bigger’. I can easily wear it all day and night then not charge until around tea time. I find the sleep stuff interesting to check each day as I’m a light sleeper and never sure how much heavy sleeping I do. Also fall/crash detection which my mums watch already has and when she slipped on black ice with me it immediately knew so that can only be a good thing with our hobby!

Just moved from 3 (38mm) to a 6 LTE (41mm). SE,4 and 5 don't have the health monitors. Very pleased with the 6, especially as it's stainless steel and was half price. Notable speed increase for strava and always on screen (meh!). The 6-8 have the same processor. 8 has a slightly bigger screen, but I couldn't see the benefit. Battery is still poor, and charged by the bed every night so no sleep monitoring.

I have had a 7 for a year or so, really like it, might get an Ultra sometime but more likely an 8 as I like the slim look. I use an Instinct Solar Crossover on the bike and the Apple for everything else, daily wear, gym, swim etc.

Any Fitbit or Garmin with smart functions will be a better upgrade than an Apple watch. Unless its the brand your afterwards. The current Apple watch advert makes me laugh when jt tells about stride length. Pretty sure Fitbit did that 10 years ago.

^^^^ having had a couple of Garmin Instincts and now a crossover Solar I’d say my Apple Watch is better for walking, cycling, swimming and smart watch use. The Garmins win on nav, battery life and ruggedness. My own opinion of course 🤪
