Bought Apple Watch SE for recording runs and bike on Strava. Battery life is pits , less than 24 hours. But big issue, when I do a long run / ride it often stops recording, completely at random. Done it many times now. Today 7 miles out in run, looked at watch all good, did U turn and straight back. Watch stopped recording about 5 mins after u turn. When synced it shows 7.6 m run. Arggg

what am I doing wrong ?

Using an Apple Watch for tracking stuff...

Not helpful in anyway as it appears to be very good at many other things. I've a few friends with Apple watches and they don't tend to use it for tracking as it doesn't seem reliable.

Are there any settings that put the watch to sleep? That might interrupt the tracking and ends up turning it off?

It’s most likely brushing against something or getting moisture on it which is triggering the screen.

I’ve been using an Apple Watch for almost 5 years and it tracks everything just fine.

^^^ probably that. Try turning “water mode” on after you start it going maybe.

Thanks. Did wonder if somehow touching screen to check time is stopping tracking. I’m only checking time not stopping activity. Big pain.

Consistently use my apple watch 8 to record hikes, runs and rides via strava. Never has this issue and is very reliable, phone on the other hand has recently started sabotaging me if I use it too much while recording hikes so I try to make sure my watch is charged enough to use that instead. Generally get a day n a half out of my watch too but I'm guessing the SE might not have as much battery ooomf.

Had this too, so now I always lock the screen as soon as I start the ride. Lock button is just below the finish one.

Only other times I have had any issues with inconsistencies seems to be in dense wood, where I think it struggles to get a signal. Has over read distance by a half compared to my friends Garmins.

Don’t use the strava watch app, it’s shit.
use the built in one, it’s much better. I think it’ll sync directly with strava now but I still use HealthFit to manage the syncing.

As above, use the workout app and get that to push to Strava.

I find the Strava app fine. Yea I've had it cancel the workout but probably only a couple of times in all the years I've used the watch and Strava.

As been mentioned I worked out it was something touching the screen.

I've had similar with Strava on my Samsung s21 phone. It started doing it this year, consistently buggers up during mountain bike rides, on the commute no issues whatsoever.

I've since stopped paying for Strava, until it improves I'm not spending money on it, the damn thing stopped 3km from the end of my megavalanche run after being faultless all that week...

Hoping Santa brings me a garmin watch....

Blaming Strava for your phone going to sleep seems very odd. On a phone it’s almost awards a power saving mode

If you have a waterproof or long sleeves on it’ll touch things on the screen cos of the damp from sweat etc. as above put the water lock on.

Been using Strava watch app for years since series 1, no problems.

Battery life wise - it’s a device you’re expected to charge daily like a phone.

Thanks all. Will try water lock. Been out today with no issues. Been touching screen and pressing buttons to see if it stops, worked perfectly. Damn frustrating when it drops.

I would agree, but it was working fine for years, then this year there's been a change, to either my phone or the app, I'm not sure which but I've tried everything I can think of to resolve it. Pretty sure it's not the phone going to sleep btw, I think it maybe be notifications causing issues, but I had it happen when I've turned them all off to check.

I'm sure it's user error, I tried to contact Strava for support but heard nothing. It's a useful tool, but I'm not paying for something that doesn't work like it used to.

Anyway, I quite fancy a Garmin now 😀
