I have an Apple TV box and use it quite a lot. Annoyingly, Amazon Prime is not available and Airplay is a bit unreliable from a phone and a bit clunky.
Looks like the new Apple TV includes an app for Prime Video and would solve my problems. Before I plonk my money down, I'd like to know if there are any other products I should consider from Amazon to solve this problem?
Can't a firmware update to your existing ATV get you Prime?
Doesn't list any available for it. Mine's about 4-5 years old so looks like the new generation has superseded it.
EDIT: Looks like it's coming this summer, but not sure if it will be for the older boxes too.

I have a smart TV with Prime and also have Apple TV connected to the same TV. Also have a fire stick in another TV. Despite the Prime app being built into the 'main' TV, the Apple TV just seems to work a bit better, plus I can airplay Eurosport from my ipad which I can't seem to work out how to do on the TV itself (via inbuilt apps). Given a choice, I'd take the Apple TV over the prime functionality. The fire stick is ok, but again doesn't seem quick as slick as the Apple product. Additionally, the fire stick (which is on a TV in the bedroom) seems to be very picky about wifi strength - to compare I plugged the Apple TV in to the same TV and it didn't seem to care about signal strength and worked just as well as downstairs....
OP I very much doubt Apple will add Prime functionality to the older ATV's
BTW clunky Airplay I manage to solve via an Ethernet cable to the ATV and putting the phone close to the router. IME clunkiness from the router.
I have the latest Apple tv box, Amazon Prime isn't available through it (yet) although we can stream it to the TV from my phone though). Apple announced an arrangement with amazon to provide a native app on the TV device but it hasn't landed yet. If that's what you'd be upgrading for, I'd hold on.
I lost the remote of the Apple TV (4-5 yrs old) and can't say I put in that much effort looking for it.
I have a Amazon Box in the same TV and two Amazon sticks... and also have NetFlix
The Box is definitely snappier than the sticks....
The Apple TV works better for screen sharing but most stuff seems to work OK once you set it up between iPad/iPhone and Amazon box....
