As apple tv wont see or stream from my nas box i am looking for a workaround. I know there is a plex app coming but my nas (zyxel nsa325) wont support plex without a too complicated for me hack so thats not an option. I watch my nas movies on my ipad mini 4 via ftp so is it possible for apple tv to mirror this on to my big tv thus meaning i can get rid of my boxee box which is currently the bridge between tv and nas?
Yes mirror/airplay it from the iPad. Note try both, I have found some apps need full mirroring (eg bbc iplayer if yiu want subtitles) whereas others just require AirPlay
Sorry i forgot to mention i ftp films via an app called av player HD. Can i airplay this then if i invest in an apple tv?
Mirroring copies everything from the iphone/ipad - [s]I'll try that app later (I assume its free) on my Apple TV (basic £69 quid one) [/s]
EDIT the app is paid so I can't try it - you might see on the app website if it supports AirPlay, do they have a forum ?. Your fallback solution would be to load the movie onto the ipad (eg by recoding it to mkv) and then it will definitely AirPlay. My gut feel is it will AirPlay/mirror fine. Note the new fancy ATV may well have an app developed for it in the future but the AirPlay/Mirror should work on the basic model I think
EDIT2 there are other ATV users here and I do recall some use NAS so hooefully they will see this, from memory VLC app mirrors fine (I din't do this as my Mac Mini is connected direct to tv )
Assuming you're talking about the newest Apple TV:
The Plex app has been around for ages now but needs a media server running. There are two apps now (at least) that can read directly from a NAS - Infuse and MrMC (a fork of Kodi but with all the dodgy streaming stuff removed). Not tried either but I would give MrMC a go first - just have a Google to check it's compatible with your particular setup.
Otherwise yes mirroring works fine.
I suspect the OP won't want to use MrMC as he will need to install legacy Java on a Mac and compile the app on the command line. It looks elegant but complicated, I can bodge some command line stuff but I backed away from this one. I suspect I will be using the mini as the server with a NAS as the storage for the media.
You could bin the Apple TV thingie and buy a Chromecast for £35. As an open device it'll not have any trouble with streaming from a NAS.
I'm close to binning my ATV. It is so laggy and gitchy the we often end up watching films on the mactop. That was until we realised that the Panasonic smart TV picks up the WD mycloud!
or just download it from the App Store and point it at your NASI suspect the OP won't want to use MrMC as he will need to install legacy Java on a Mac and compile the app on the command line.
