Only just started using Mail, and still on 10.6.8. Can't find anything suitable to use while Mail is closed, and doing other things, but still want notification of emails arriving.

Growl and Herald etc. all for later OSX versions.

Any thoughts?

Growl was about in those days - might be worth looking for an older 1.2.x release of Growl and GrowlMail.

Edit - as a bonus, it was free then! 🙂

Back when I used to use Growl, you had to use Growl Mail plugin.

Can I ask why you can't just leave Mail open?

Aaah, just downloaded GrowlMail and it won't install below OSX 10.9. Any other ideas? - other than Growl which doesn't support Mail, and GrowlMail which won't install with 10.6.8.

ThreeFish, it occasionally gets closed by someone else using the computer, and I don't always remember to reopen it.

Well, I would say that is still your best method of getting notifications on your system. As you will be pissing about trying to find earlier versions of plugins, which are probably not available by now, to get Growl/Growlmail working.

What mail provider do you use? As there are a couple of third party Gmail notifiers available. Only problem of course, is whether they will work with 10.6.8.

Edit:

Growlmail 1.2.5 is the version that works with Snow Leopard.

So install early version of Growl, and follow this:

...and it might work....might not, though.
