I’ve hung on and on using a 6s since it was released and over that time it’s been flipping marvellous, including a free battery upgrade.
So time to “move on UP! and keep on buying ..”
And pass this phone on to my Wife (who has my old 6.. and that phone is falling apart.. like literally)
So, XS or just last years X or maybe keep the size of the 6s and go for an 8?
Dunno, anyone playing with an X they can categorically say “it’s awesome” because if not I’m going for a discounted 8 on SimOnly and buy outright.
TVMly
I have an X, it’s pretty awesome.
Definitely the X 🙂
BTW - how long before a non-Apple user comes on and says "I'm not going to buy a new iPhone"?
I’m just out of contract on a 7 and quite fancy the new camera in the X or the Xs.
This place has changed though. A couple of years ago this would have already been a multi-page thread of fanboi wars.
I'm not , after issues with a broken screen on the 7 and how Apple dealt with it (I.e didn't) I vowed both to buy another
Went over to the darkside with an S9 and not looked back
Apple have pulled the X from their store but resellers still have them
So, XS or just last years X or maybe keep the size of the 6s and go for an 8?
obv you need an Xs Max no one has a phone with a 'home button' lol how quaint
obv you need an Xs Max no one has a phone with a ‘home button’ lol how quaint
Apparently punctuation is quaint now too 😉
Just out of contract on my 7. XS for me. Max is too big for my liking and I’m not waiting another month for the XR. Well, I say I’m not waiting another month - I guess only pre-order day on Friday will tell.
Disappointed in the Xr - a new phone with a 720p screen

Seems a strange decision
Old 6 sat here, debating an upgrade but I think I'll hold on. I was right on the upgrade cycle in the past but the 6 has just worked for me and the 8 I have for work isn't really any better. Plus I have some really nice headphones with a 3.5mm jack.
New camera processing stuff looks amazing, I wonder if it’s as good as they claim IRL?
eSIM option also looks v useful for work users but as with the Watch limited only to EE customers? Pull your finger out o2!!
just slightly disappointed there was no smaller phone.
the SE hasn't been updated. Even the 4.6" screens are no more. There's a [massive?] market out there for the smaller phone and there's only the slightly out of date SE and some Sonys (Sonies?) that are decent enough.
Plus I have some really nice headphones with a 3.5mm jack.
The phones without one come with a lightening adapter. I went from a 6+ to an X, it’s not been an issue for me, I just leave the adapter on the headphones.
Too big, too expensive. My 5S still works so I'm sticking with that.
Why would you pay £1000 for a phone that can achieve the same end as one you can pay £160 for?
BTW – how long before a non-Apple user comes on and says
3.5mm, shnarff shnarff shnarff.
it’s not been an issue for me, I just leave the adapter on the headphones.
So if you want to plug your phone in elsewhere you have to carry your adaptor and your headphones?
What an arse ache.
Am I doing this right? 😀
Why would you pay £1000 for a phone that can achieve the same end as one you can pay £160 for?
Some people like to buy nice things :shrugs:
Same as Bikes, Cars, Watches etc etc etc
I'd like an upgrade to the SE as well, I don't want a mini-tablet in my pocket. Are they discontinuing the SE does anyone know?
Disappointed in the Xr – a new phone with a 720p screen
I generally think these 1080p+ displays on phones are a bit of a nonsense, past 300ppi and you're into seriously diminishing returns.
XR likely for me, don't think OLED and the cameras will be worth the extra for XS and the "in between" size seems a decent compromise. Main disappointment is that "coral" is not as orangey as I'd like.
Yes, SE is gone. Entry level is iPhone 7 now (£449 32GB / £549 128GB).
Cant see the SE on the apple website anymore but they have em in Currys for £239. Im running a Iphone 6 and will probably go for an iphone XR when they come out
XR looks the best of the bunch
Shame no SE available?
Why would you pay £1000 for a phone that can achieve the same end as one you can pay £160 for?
No reason. If you could actually do that.
Giff gaff had SE’s for £199
Disappointed in the Xr – a new phone with a 720p screen
I was worried about that, but it's the same pixel density as the 6s/7/8.
I wouldn't be able to tell if my 6s was 720 or 1080 or whatever, it looks fine - but I think I'd want to see it in the flesh before committing.
Plus, it comes in yellow or orange, and is £250 cheaper!
Really disappointed they are ditching the SE. Mistake IMO. 🙁
The SE is a really good size for me, I don't want a massive phablet, I want a phone I can put in the pocket of my jeans and still comfortably sit down. I like being able to use the whole screen with one hand. I like being able to mount my phone on my bike without creating an aerofoil. I like having a battery that lasts more than a day because it's not powering a massive screen.
Why would you pay £1000 for a phone that can achieve the same end as one you can pay £160 for?

Why would you pay £1000 for a phone that can achieve the same end as one you can pay £160 for?
it’s a good question..
My 6s cost £699 BITD when God weralad, amortise that over 3yrs and that’s a couple hundred quid a year.. deduct the £100 for the wife’s 6 and that’s about £150 a year which let’s face it is hardly anything for a handheld computer that allows me to post on here from the bog and annoy some of you lot! Bargain when you think about it.
The 8 is £699 and X £999... 8 will fit in my poncy man wallet, X won’t. X has photo enhancements and I do take about 30-40 pics a week of my food and post them to insta once I’ve filtered them to death.
Not that bothered about another lightning plug for earphones..
And I can afford a new phone by recycling this one to the wife who seems to use hers for grouting and paint mixing.
Is.. is that.. a good thing? Being... "cray ripped" with the "selfies"? Sounds frightfully painful.

Must be a very tight fit as they are quite similar in size
Can you pop the back off and change the battery yet?
Nope, but you can't do that with any high end phone these days. It plays havoc with the waterproofing.
The SE is a really good size for me, I don’t want a massive phablet, I want a phone I can put in the pocket of my jeans and still comfortably sit down
Likewise. I was hoping for an SE sized phone with a full front screen but seems we're very much in the minority.
So - what's the smallest phone in the new range?
For headphones, are there any good BT converters - that seems like it might be a better solution than a lightning adaptor if you've got to add something to current phones
I generally think these 1080p+ displays on phones are a bit of a nonsense,
Couldn't agree more! It's a tiny screen! What the hell benefit would you get from such high resolution.
I'm hanging on to my 6S - and my next phone will have a headphone socket.... I can't stand bluetooth headphones!

My problem is I've been lucky on the Android side. I had a Moto G5 - £150 sim free, then a G5s which I bought from the classifieds for £60. Ideally I want turbo battery charging, some splashproofing and a faster / better phone within either sub system thats going to cost me >£500 to have a phone that doesn't come with the flaws I don't want, which is mainly a bigger size than can fit in my Birzman phone wallet thingy. When you've spent £210 on 2 handsets over 3 years, suddenly £500 for a "bit" more feels excessive.

Mrs K has a 6s though and its her 40th next year so I'm saving to get her an inscribed X as my present to her.
Likewise. I was hoping for an SE sized phone with a full front screen but seems we’re very much in the minority.
Add dual sim and I'm in. It didn't compare in build quality, but the Oneplus X came about the closest to ticking all the boxes, I should have kept it really.
Why would you pay £1000 for a phone that can achieve the same end as one you can pay £160 for?
Want to buy a £160 bike? You can if you want.
Likewise. I was hoping for an SE sized phone with a full front screen but seems we’re very much in the minority.
Agree completely. That's the phone I want… we're probably a significant minority. Take out the sim tray and olde worlde headphone socket, to make more room for the battery… make it expensive rather than the cheap option… give it alll the power of the top end handsets.
BTW – how long before a non-Apple user comes on and says “I’m not going to buy a new iPhone”?
I *AM* an Apple user. I am not buying a new phone. Sticking with my 6s – really can't see a great deal of value in upgrading.
There’s a [massive?] market out there for the smaller phone and there’s only the slightly out of date SE and some Sonys (Sonies?) that are decent enough.
If the market was there, I assume Apple would address it.
Yours, a bitter SE owner.
p.s John Lewis have them for £239 with 2 year warranty. GuffGaff £199 but only if existing customer otherwise £210 with a goody.bag.
Yeah, dual sim (physical + e) is a really attractive one for me for travel. Depends how it is implemented, I suspect it won't be totally appealing and there will be some career restrictions. Boo!
I currently have an 8plus, the camera is just ridiculously good. It still doesn't have the dynamic range of a proper camera, same with low light performance, but its getting insanely close. Portrait mode is staggeringly good.
Asi had to change contracts, I've got a free upgrade waiting for me - I think XS will be the way to go, but will compare 8plus to XS max and see how they feel.
exactly. Sadly I don’t think a bunch of whinging middle-aged IT managers really reflects the wider market 😂If the market was there, I assume Apple would address it.
similarly I doubt they are busting a gut to satisfy the “I want to spend 50p on a handset every 5 years” demographic
given the news this morning, I’d wait for the fire sale. Also not sure how much that warranty will be worth 🙁p.s John Lewis have them for £239 with 2 year warranty
apparently low light & shooting into the sun significantly better with new phone. Seriously considering it based on that!same with low light performance, but its getting insanely close. Portrait mode is staggeringly good.
"Disappointed in the Xr – a new phone with a 720p screen"
"Seems a strange decision"
Well not really since a 720p screen will give you an HD quality image upto about 55inches, so perfectly adequate.
"Why would you pay £1000 for a phone that can achieve the same end as one you can pay £160 for?"
Well clearly a £160 phone doesn't do everything that a £1000 phone can do...and it can do nothing as well as a £1000 phone. It's like saying why buy a supercar when a ford fiesta dose the school run just as well. Ideally you purchase a product that can do what you want it to do, but sometimes you want to pay a bit more for a nicer product. Hardly a characteristic that is unique to smartphones. Why buy an expensive mountain bike when a supermarket lump of pig iron does the same job. You could go on with any product you choose.
My iPhone 5 is almost just about cream crackered after many many years of service, so i'm up for a replacement and given how good that phone has been and how long I've had it £1000 for a top end phone doesn't seem that expensive in the grand scheme of things especially since you wont be paying out that much in one go, it's down to the monthly amount you pay for a phone. You're going to spend a hell of a lot more to the network provider over the years than the actual device.
IOS12 does seem to speed a 6S up, I’m debating on new or just pop a new battery in my 6S Plus and run it another year.
Add dual sim and I’m in
In software on the new iPhones (subject to opt-in from the operators) except in china where physical dual sim IIRC

that's good news. I think i'll probably be replacing the battery in my SE and running for another year. It's mint otherwise.
Face ID and a better camera would have been good
I'd happily have shelled out for an SE2 that was just the same size as the SE with a more modern processor, proper NFC support and waterproof. Anything else would have been a bonus.
or just pop a new battery in my 6S Plus and run it another year.
Can they not sort the basics out first, like making EE actually support the watch properly being as they are the sole network it’s available on?
Still waiting to be allowed to have one, but you can’t have a watch on a business contract.
How long have we got until they release an iOS that the SE won't run?
Seems vodafone have pulled their finger out to support eSIM and will be supporting the Apple Watch too. Hopefully a bit of competition there will get EE to do a better job of it.

Aah - good news - may get the eSIM watch after all. No way I was going to tie myself to the car crash that is EE.
I'm still hoping for a new SE model next year (the original released in March not the usual September release schedule). It's a decent seller for them (outside of China anyhow) so would seem strange for them not to, their overall market share rose after the 5SE release to so it's not like it was only stealing sales from other iPhone models.
How long have we got until they release an iOS that the SE won’t run?
That question was asked on here just the other day. Given that they just stopped selling the SE yesterday I think it is not unreasonable to expect about two years worth of iOS updates.
(Not that the phone suddenly stops functioning just because it can't run the latest iOS).
SE has been discontinued

aaaah man if only there was a

+1,000,000. Apple, please stop making every geration of iPhone bigger!
but you can’t have a watch on a business contract....
You can, because I do.
Seems vodafone have pulled their finger out
EE had a time limited UK exclusive on the Watch, 'till just about now, so there was no rush on Voda's part.
+1,000,001
And "IT managers" love phones the size of a truck, to show off, and have stuck on their dashboards. Plenty of "normals", and especially cyclists, would like…
… pocket size
… as big a battery as possible
... as big a screen as possible
… (more) dust and water proof than 5/se
… all the new high speed tech
… doesn't have to be a bargain basement price

A 55" TV you look at from the other side of the room, not a foot away. It's the same ppi as a the iPhone 4s from 2011 and about what you'd expect from a phone costing under £150.

IIRC they always claimed this wasn't the case, it was a technical issue relating to the network being able to handle eSIMs.EE had a time limited UK exclusive on the Watch, ’till just about now,
I have a 6S in a massive Otterbox case (which makes it bigger than an XR & probably the same size as an XR in a slim case) in my Troy Lee Skylines right now. It is absolutely fine. Maybe stop wearing your sister's jeans? 😂pocket size
It’s the same ppi as a the iPhone 4s from 2011
Maybe that's got something to do with any more ppi than that isn't really worth it and is just a battery killer?
Why do you all need a bigger battery?
My 6s lasts a couple of days, if used heavily at least a day and a half.
I'd suggest your version of "used heavily" differs from some others 🙂
"Mrs K has a 6s though and its her 40th next year so I’m saving to get her an inscribed X as my present to her."

Assuming that were true, why is it £750?
My 6s lasts a couple of days, if used heavily at least a day and a half.
Mine barely lasts a day (6s too). I was in London recently and I had it set to 'low power' mode - went out around 9am and by 6pm I was nursing it heavily. We did most of the Google Maps directions using my wife's 6 in that time. I have no idea why mine is so bad (I had the battery replaced in March in the free replacement scheme too). I can get through 30% of the battery on the train (30 minutes) listening to music and browsing Guardian, BBC, Facebook etc.
^^^ That is my experience too tbh. Can you not plug it in on the train though? I guess the better & more useful smartphones get, the more we'll use them so it's always gonna kill the battery!
Mrs K has a 6s though and its her 40th next year so I’m saving to get her an inscribed X as my present to her.
Just remember that phones aren't like jewellery, posh watches etc where you'll plan to hand them down to your next of kin. They have a relatively short shelf-life and even a good one will be almost completely obsolete within 5 years. Inscribing it is cute, but I'd be tempted to not do this and plan to upgrade it after 2-3 years instead. It'll be much easier to do this if you don't have a personal message on the back, which will only make it harder for her to part with and diminishing its value to others.
Cold I know, but maybe worth considering.
How long have we got until they release an iOS that the SE won’t run?
That question was asked on here just the other day. Given that they just stopped selling the SE yesterday I think it is not unreasonable to expect about two years worth of iOS updates.
I think you're underestimating how long Apple typically support phones for.
The newest phone to 'drop off' the support list for iOS12 is the 5. That was deprecated in 2013 so 4 years of OS updates from the time last sold (though actually it wouldnt run 10 so maybe 3 years).
Can you not plug it in on the train though?
This was in London - I had it fully charged when I left the hotel and I had annoyingly forgotten to pack my power bank.
Just remember that phones aren’t like jewellery, posh watches etc where you’ll plan to hand them down to your next of kin. They have a relatively short shelf-life and even a good one will be almost completely obsolete within 5 years.
This too - I was gifted an iPod by my wife as an engagement present with a message on the back. It's now sat in a drawer, broken, but I can't throw it away.
Want to buy a £160 bike? You can if you want.
Hardly the same comparison....
1) More like £1000 bike vs £6000 bike
2) I'm free to take the bits off either bike and fit them to another make
3) My bike doesn't force me to update... just to keep basic functionality
Assuming that were true, why is it £750?
Because that's the price the market will bear.
@stevextc - but nobody plays the 'good enough for me' game for any consumer goods...
How many people really need a i5/i7/i9 laptop with a terabbyte of storage for their emails and browsing when an i3 with 256GB would be just fine?
How many programs does your washing machine/dishwasher have, how many get used?
How many modes does your oven/microwave have, how many get used?
Up until this point, I've had the flagship model of each iPhone release and for the first time, there is absolutely no functional benefit to me having the latest phone. I have an X and the Xs is seemingly identical bar the processor (which is still lightning fast) and the waterproofing.
No new iPhone for me.
