Sorry to clog up the forum on what’s probably a basic query but am trying to get my head around it. Probably a simple solution for those more tech savvy, so any help appreciated.
Currently I have a couple of iPads for the kids and a work iPhone all using the same Apple ID. Photos sync between them and upload to iCloud etc, all fine and dandy.
I have now bought a personal phone as want to separate work / life as it’s become very difficult.
What I want to do is keep all of those photos, my keychain for passwords etc on the new phone and iPads. I then want the existing work iPhone to just be used for work, so will delete all the apps and personal stuff not work related.
I was thinking I change the Apple ID email, set up the new phone by copying things across as that works quite well, then sign out of the work phone and sign in under a new Apple ID.
My main concern is what happens to those photos on the work phone - signing out won’t de-link from iCloud but I’d like to clear them from my work phone (it’s likely work will wipe them anyway but they’re mostly of the kids etc so don’t want to lose them).
Sorry if this doesn’t make much sense, I’m massively stressed at the moment so finding it difficult to be coherent
Could you set up the new personal phone by copying everything from the current one, then wipe the old one and set up with a new icloud, then add that to your family in settings so you can use stuff you've bought if you need to?
As prawny said, set up your new iPhone as your new phone using either copy or restore (make sure your icloud photos are turned on so there aren't any randomly only saved on your old phone photos). Then completely wipe your work phone and set it up with a new icloud account.
^ this. And you'll make your life much, much easier in future to give everyone their own Apple ID and set up as a family.
As far as I understand, you can select which features of your Apple account are synchronised on each device separately.
So keep the same Apple account logged into all devices so you have your full contacts list and passwords updated across devices but on your work go into the settings and turn off iCloud on the photos or turn off auto download on the apps so any apps on your home device are not automatically installed on your work phone.
Settings -> <your name> Apple ID, iCloud -> Clound -> (under "apps using iCloud") click "show all"
Then enable / disable the features you want sync'd on your work phone.
Thank you so much everyone
Does the work phone have an associated work Apple ID? If so remove the personal account ID and then you sign into the work account on the work phone then add your personal ID afterwards. You'll get options as to what you want to add from the personal side of things after signing in to the account.
Does the work phone have an associated work Apple ID
no I only have one Apple ID at the moment but will be creating a “work only” one specifically for the work phone
