I'm on an iPhone 11 Pro, and I cant see anything on the 14 that makes me think I need to switch. I was hoping it may have a better zoom camera but no, maybe the 15 will be the model worth switching for.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus - Apple (UK)

Discuss nicely 🙂

11 to 14? Stick.

I went from 11 to 13 (I get free with work) and really can't tell a difference. Apart from squared off edges which makes it less fondleable! 🙂

Stick. I'd be waiting until either the battery started to die or you stopped getting updates. (Full disclosure: I'm on Android. But I'll be applying exactly the same logic to my S21).

Still on a 7 here. Performs pretty much all the features that I personally need in a phone.

I am 100% on team apple (made an arbritary descision in 2009 and now I am in for life) but the cost of being on the cutting edge of it is not for me.

My 11 pro is working just fine. Its just am I missing something that is soo much better on the 14, I cant see it.

Allegedly the iPhone 15 will have 5 or 6 x zoom, which IMO would be worth changing for.

Still on a 7 here. Performs pretty much all the features that I personally need in a phone.

I defintely saw a change going from 8 to 11. My wife had a 10 and that was significantly better than the 8, but the gap from 10 to 11pro is not so big however the camera is much better.

The iphone 14 pro starts at £1100 for the 128GB version and goes up to nearly £1500 with more storage!

Unless you are extremely flush right now I'd be sticking. Modern phones are usually pretty good for at least 4 years if you don't break them IME. My brother is still on the iphone 5s!

12 Pro Max here. I’ll be sticking (I should’ve stuck last time) until it breaks.

We hit diminishing returns a long time ago with new iPhones. I wouldn't bother either for the standard 14 - the 14 Pro does have some good camera stuff (48MP, more optical zoom) along with other niceties if that matters to you - although starting at £1099 now.

Plus iOS16 will be out in a week or two and that has some big look and feel changes that will bring some novelty for free.

I've changed jobs recently and had to give back my 12 mini, so I'm currently using an old 7 that I found at the back of a drawer. battery life is shocking, the speaker farts, call quality is questionable, GPS is flakey and the camera is a potato so not worth a battery replacement.

new job pays an allowance rather than a company phone so debating whether to get a 13 mini (I quite like the form factor, not so much the battery life) that the allowance will cover the payments on or to spring for a 14 Pro for the camera. i was pretty set on the 14pro until they announced the UK price hike.

My daughter's got a 13 Pro and it's huge. AFAIK the new 14 is 6.1", same size as my S21, and IMO it's just about right - decent battery life and not so big you can't fit it in your pocket sitting down.

the 14 pro is the same size as the standard 14, just with more cameras, maybe a bit thicker.

the max versions are ridiculous. I'd need bigger pockets/hands.

Ah, gotcha. It's the Max my daughter's got. Luckily as a woman she usually has a bag of some kind with her so she can at least carry it. (Unluckily, as a woman none of her clothes have decent pockets, but that's a different matter...)

i was pretty set on the 14pro until they announced the UK price hike.

All the stuff I read before was that the 14 would be slightly cheaper. I cant see them keeping it long at that price. I am sure they dropped the 13's price not too long after launch

No touch ID?

Not interested. Not even slightly, and I was already failry uninterested as the smallest one is still a fair bit bigger than my 2020 SE

until they announced the UK price hike

If you're announcing international pricing that needs to last 12 months, assuming parity between the pound and the dollar is wise. The UK is in for a hard year, and the currency situation reflects that.

i think given the immenent £/$ parity, it seems unlikely it'll be getting any cheaper.

and face-id is orders better than touch-id. I'll be happy to relegate this 7 to the back of a drawer again.

When it comes to paying with apple pay I have seen no evidence that face ID is orders better, in fact it appears to require more steps to do the same thing. No thanks 🙂

It may be better for everything else, but not that.

Is double tapping a button on the side of the phone a hard thing to do then? 🙂

Touch ID?

I prefer Touch ID for payments as well. They may have implemented it before Face ID, but that doesn't mean the newer system is better for everyone's use cases.

13 mini (I quite like the form factor, not so much the battery life)

13 mini does much better on battery than the 12 mini, in fact better than the fullsize 12. It's fine for all day unless you're hammering it.

I lost mine earlier this year and had no hesitation going for the same again. Perfect phone unless you need/want a huge screen.

No, it's not hard.

But my point still stands. It requires more steps to do the same thing, and is therefore not orders better for apple pay.

13 mini (I quite like the form factor, not so much the battery life)

It's much better than the 12 mini that I have for work, when I was looking at the 13 mini I compared the specs against my 10 I had at the time and the 13 had a better battery life, it'll last all day unless I hammer it. It's a shame they've got rid of the mini range, fingers crossed they update the SE and put it in the mini shell.

If I was the OP I'd stick, as others have said they're incremental updates but nothing earth shattering. I would have kept my 10 until they stopped supporting it but a burn mark on the camera and the arrival of my little one pushed me to update as I was using the camera more.

Pro is the camera

Agree that Touch ID is better than face for some applications. Sometimes Face ID is quite picky on how you position the phone whereas with touch you can have the phone ready to go before you’re looking at it. It’s not a huge deal though and I personally wouldn’t choose a phone based on it.

I’m also holding out for a year to see if there’s a better zoom.

Sure is!

Which is why I would prefer both, even if it came at a price premium. Which it will, because it's Apple!

After getting up to speed with the new phones coming, and thinking of moving back to Apple after a disappointing Samsung, I'm waiting to see if the prices come down a little and just go for the 13 Pro or Pro Max

Seems they've missed a trick with not moving to USB-C

Hopefully I get another year or two out of my 10, safari can be flakey at times, battery not as good as it was, but at least it didn’t die a week after the 2 year mark like my 6s did!

with the removal of the sim-card slot in the US, I think they will go full wireless first.

Even the 12 Pro was a massive step up from the 11P in terms of photography, so if OP wasn’t bothered by that then indeed this new one will defo be wasted 😂

Considering a Max, for the better zoom than I have now, even though I think It’s probably slightly too big. Agree that one with 4-5x optical would be amazing! Currently have a 12P, nowt wrong with it, Mrs does need a new phone tho so can pass that along to her 😀

I have a 12Pro and was hoping for a better zoom camera on the 14Pro as that is the only thing that would trigger an upgrade. I'm sticking for at least another year and hoping the 15Pro really will be a step up.

The Sat SOS feature is a nice touch though. Same functionality would have required a Garmin InReach or similar before. That alone would get an upgrade from me if planning a remote trip this year. Save £300 in hardware + 2yrs free access.

I don’t think it tracks so you’d need to be conscious after an incident to use it

Plus I hope your trip is in the US

“ Emergency SOS via satellite is available only in the U.S. (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) and Canada.”

Might be my first iPhone. Hope the satellite comms bit comes to Europe but sneaky suspicion that it’s unique to the US-destined phones.

Pixel 4 has been good but so slow now, Android is buggy (Chrome doubly so), and the ads are just unbearable. More than 60% of search results are now ads on my phone, Gmail has them slotted in amongst emails, and YouTube sucks.

Being an apple user since 2000ish I used to get the new iPhones every year up to iPhone 5 but since 2012 I’ve not bothered as there’s nothing in the new releases that I personally thought worth it, I bought a 2nd hand 6S in 2015 ish then an iPhone XS in 2020 (mum still uses my 6S) which has years left in it for my use. I use it only for phone/messages and music/roon/podcasts, no games/apps etc. Guess I’m not a “good consumer” as it doesn’t interest me.

US / Canada / Scotland and I would be happy.

in the early days the leaps in performance and functionality from year to year were pretty significant whereas the platform is more mature now and improvements are incremental. durability is better now too, the early phones really weren't that robust.

pre-orders at 1. need to decide whether to go for the 14pro...

Firefox on android is decent, and there are, er, COUGH plugins for it that will, er, COUGH 'help' with the COUGH ads. (Not on Gmail though). Sorry, seemed to get something stuck in my throat there.

Also don't forget DuckDuckGo, which is a bit more of a privacy focused search engine than Google.

What I did will never get is why people who only use their phone for calls/messages/music even bother coming onto a thread for a cutting edge, premium smartphone and say “ooohhh, it’s not for me, I only use mine for calls/messages/music” 😀🙄😂

My 11 Pro Max has started showing some significant issues with connecting to both wifi, which it shows as being connected to, but attempts to access Apple Music get a message that I need to connect to wifi, and also connecting to my car infotainment system.

My car Infotainment system has also developed a problem with its screen - the warranty ran out last month. ☹️
Everything seems to be going wrong at the moment, with big costs involved, and I’m really struggling to deal with it all.

The phone I was intending to upgrade anyway, there are significant improvements over mine, including a 1Tb storage upgrade, as well as cameras and performance.

My car, on the other hand… 🥺

When my Samsung work phone went back I really wanted a 13 but in the end settled for my wife's cracked screen XR while she got the 13. Having seen them back to back I really can't justify the extra cost for the limited improvements so expect I'll just get the screen fixed at some point.

Still, both are miles better than the android Samsung.

I have an XS that I was planning to upgrade to the 14 Pro. But blimey, the price is ridiculous

My XS is on a noticeable go slow, but the battery health is apparently 80% and I'm wondering whether that's actually optimistic, if I get the battery replaced it might improve performance. Has anyone done this and noticed an actual improvement? I know they say performance is slowed down when battery performance reduces, but wondering whether phone age also kicks in a bit

the perfomance of the phone will not change, it's just the software is asking it to do more. I'm using an old 7 and the software and its a bit sluggish but the fact a 6yr old phone can still run the latest OS is quite impressive.

Might be my first iPhone. Hope the satellite comms bit comes to Europe but sneaky suspicion that it’s unique to the US-destined phones.

Something I read today was hinting that it’ll be sooner rather than later - Apple have bought into the Globalstar satellite network in a very big way, somewhere around 80% of its capacity, so they’ll be wanting to capitalise on their investment.

I’m close to putting in an online order for a 14 Pro Max with 1Tb of storage with O2. I checked what I can get for my 11 Pro Max, and somewhere around £288. Something else they’re offering; pay an extra £3.50/month, and you get free upgrades in future. There don’t seem to be any catches, so I might go for that - a year old 14 Pro Max is going to have a high resale value, so I can see where they’re coming from.

Oh, and with reference to my above post, I think my car infotainment system is probably ok, there’s been a breakdown in the phones ability to talk to it, probably needs a hard reset, but as I’m replacing it, I’m not too fussed about it.

Apple offered me £35 for the 7 that’s getting retired. I’ll keep it in the back of a drawer for that price..

Set it up as a home security camera. I’ve still got my old 6+ kicking around, so I might install an appropriate app and set it up somewhere.

Stick. I’d be waiting until either the battery started to die or you stopped getting updates.

This is sound advice. It’s all about want vs need. Sure, it’s nice to have the latest thing, but it’s expensive, pointless and environmentally damaging. I tend to get about 3-4 years out of any smartphone; all the little drops, bangs and hot/cold cycles tend to degrade the electronics, and the batteries also degrade. I replace when performance becomes a pain in the arse. On a 12 now; will probably not replace for another 2-3 years yet. Plus a big jump to new technology is far more fun than a smaller one from say one year to the next year’s model. I went from a Samsung S7 to my iPhone 12; a significant leap!

I’ve a 11 pro and a Samsung tablet - I feel the Android OS is better for me. But Apple hardware is just so good - I’ve not seen an Android phone that feels as solid as an iPhone, and has the same(ish) specs in a small(ish) form factor.

Plus, I carry the phone when i’m out hill running in a waist belt where it sits for hours in warm salty sweat, and - touch wood - seems totally unbothered about that

got a 14pro, moving up from a 7. It's really nice but a fair bit heavier and I still haven't sorted the esim out yet.

If anyone wants a working 7 with a cracked screen let me know. I'm thinking charitable donation and postage cost.

@doris5000, 3G is due to be phased out from next year. A new phone will be required. We use a couple of 5S phones for work duty and Vodafone have been nagging us to upgrade for 6 months.

I’m in an 8 which was second hand from CEX, I’ll give it to apple though I managed to smash a small bit of the screen too left and even 9 months later it hasn’t come off any further!

Going to a 13 in a few weeks as cheaper than my 8 is costing me at the moment, I can only use an apple phone now too!

Looking forward to the upgrade but tbh the 8 even camerawise hasn’t been bad. Definitely slowed down a tad though I’ll say, but that’s fairly standard!

Well, that was a mistake. Following further investigation EE now suspects me of fraud.

7 was light but screen felt small, I accidentally went with XR after that and couldn’t wait for a change as it felt too heavy. I got 12 now and really have no issues or upgradeitis after a year on it. These have been work phones with 2 year contract so I don’t have much emotional or financial attachment to them.

Just returned my 14 Pro to the Apple Store. Couldn’t get on with the size of it, or more crucially, the weight, after years with a 12 Mini.
