Or equivalent.

You know, those mini-speakers you stick in your ear?

That's the problem, how do you get them to stay in? No matter how I wiggle and adjust them they fall out as soon as I do anything. Anything in this case might be as simple as just opening my mouth. Obviously they work for lots of people but how?

Get some that actually go down your lughole a bit, with wee soft silicone bits that grip and also block out external sound. Airpods just kind of hang on your outer ear.

I had a pair of JBL Reflect Flow until recently, they were very good. Great sound and stayed well put, they had an extra silicone bit that kinda hooked over part of the outer ear too.

Unfortunately the case died after a couple of years (stopped charging) and JBL couldn't replace so I got to choose something else. I've now got some Jabra Active Elite 75t, which are awesome. They stay in the ears really well (they come with three sizes of silicone thingies - so did the JBLs). The sound is also excellent, you can tweak levels using the app, and they have active noise cancelling.

Are they the basic ones or the ones with the silicon cups?

Which ones do you have? Do they have silicone tips? You could try buying memory foam ones, or even making custom earplugs for your buds?

Here’s why they probably don’t fit:

Tried ones like the Samsung Galaxy Buds? I never thought I'd find anything that would stay in my weirdly shaped ears, but tried the Samsung Buds and they were a perfect fit. (Still not loud enough though. Never found any loud enough.)

The only Apple pods that I've found that don't fall out are the Air pod pros, all the others never stay in my ears.

I think it depends on your ear shape - if old wired Apple ones fit, the standard ones tend to as well. I like the Pros but I find they can *feel* a bit like they are working their way out but they never actually do. For sound quality / noise cancelling though – I'll never go back.

I have Apple AirPod Pro and the new Beats Studio buds, they both have silicone tips which grip the walls of your ear canal and prevent the earpiece from falling out.

I’ve only done light exercise with them and find they stay put and so far not come out.

It’s a very different interface from the wired ear bugs which I find fall out even with light walking.

I’ve seen a few of the action sport athletes at the Olympics wearing them and a few of the people at the skate park. Don’t know if the polarity is just a fashion thing or they genuinely do stay put?

It's the wired Apple ones that I've tried, probably came with the phone. Simply refuse to remain anywhere near my ear!

I'm quite happy with earphones that have hooks to go over your ears but just wondered if there was a technique/trick to using the earbuds.

If they fit, they fit and if they don't then it is simply because the shape doesn't suit your ear shape – if you need to carry on using them you can get over-ear clips

Definitely an ear sharp thing. Mrs P is a fan of Apple EarPods/AirPods, I can’t get them to stay in my ears for more than 2 minutes and then I have to move very carefully.

I reckon I’d be fine with the AirPods Pro but I’m not made of money so they’re out.

I’ve currently got several pairs on the go, my go too are some MPOW M30s which are cheap, totally wireless and sound better than fine, the only issue is they’ve got touch sensitive controls so are useless in the rain. Some no name hook over in ear jobs for running and some sure se215 Bluetooth jobs which are great but clunky in use.

Ah, that saves me looking into them any further then - my wired ones will fall out at the drop of a hat, my ears are likely a non standard shape - did look at the AirPods style things, will need to look at the shaped ones as option. At least with the wired ones they're attached to *something* - I was wary that the wireless design means they'd just pop out, clearly they do...

Cambridge Audio Mellomania are a great sounding earphone and come with a ludicrous number of tips. There’ll be some in the selection that fit your lug holes

You can buy a box of thin silicon sleeves that fit over EarPods and AirPods, that a little extra thickness and grip. I wear standard EarPods all day at work, and they certainly seem to stay in place much better with them. I think you can get little foam ones as well.

Heres a cheeky tip which may be of use to some others, I was recently able to get PC World to price match the following, slightly dubious looking supplier to get some Airpod Pros for a substantially better price than I could find elsewhere. As some others have said, I find they stay in perfectly during exercise, and the noise cancellation is excellent.

Do they need to be wireless? Sony do some great ear buds for less than £50

These are my current faves. Samsung Buds Pro. They just seem to fit my outer ear without having to be jammed in. Stay put at 40mph on the bike. Sound pretty good too, and lots of features.

Cambridge Audio Mellomania

Returned a pair of these. Sounded amazing, but buggy Bluetooth for me. Wouldn't stay connected, which means you have to fish your phone out and reconnect.

Test with the wired ones. If they fit fine and don’t fall out? The simple AirPods will too. That’s what I did and they have never fallen out. I had a very expensive pair of in-ear Klipsch, but psoriasis means I can’t insert them in my ears.

Just buy some of these.
Fit, sound quality and battery life / charging are all great. And they're waterproof to IPX8.

They do. Usually have one in to get Garmin prompts + a podcast. Hit 40 on the big tarmac hill on the way home (but you can't hear anything over the wind 🙂)

Look up rubber Apple ear hooks on eBay or Amazon. I have some that go in the ear rather than outside. They work well for running and mountain biking.

Just had an Amazon pop up. The pro versions are reduced to £189 ( assuming the new ones will be announced on Monday) . At that price I thought why not. Will probably hang on from opening them just in case the new version is miraculously cheaper though

I bought a pair of Edifier NeoBuds Pro through an Indigogo campaign, they’re normally about £129, I got them for £79, IIRC, and I’m really very impressed with them. I tend to use them most of the time now, they come with a range of different sized eartips, I swapped the ones they came with for a pair that were very slightly smaller, and they fit just fine. Sound quality is amazingly good, nicely detailed in the midrange, not too bright and harsh, with a remarkable amount of bass. Neat little carry-case/charger, too.

Genetics. You either have the ear slot shape, or you don’t. Mine are always rock solid resting in my ear slot. Same shape as the wired ones. I can’t put anything inside my ear canal so I find apple perfect. The posh ones don’t fit.

The wireless charging ones were on offer recently I upgraded and passed on the others to son1. I can’t say the new cases is a life changer but it sits in the bedside charger with the watch and phone just fine.
