It's Mrs Carlos birthday coming up and she has hinted at some Apple Air Pods.
Simple question - are the Pro's worth getting? What do they do/are they better for the extra ££
Ta
Carlos
The Pros have noise cancelling and are specifically designed to fall out of your ears on a whim.
If you don't need noise cancelling and prefer them to stay in your ears, get the standard ones*.
*Battery life isn't as good though.
Dolby Atmos support is a winner for the Pros.
Mine don’t fall out of my ears. Pro’s sound better and the noise cancellation is very useful indeed.
I’ve got the Pro and my endear the normal ones. Pro are much better even just for the noise cancellation. They don’t fall out of your ears on a whim.
I've owned both.
The Pros are markedly different in both fit and function.
I had no issue with the fit of the std pair but with the squishy tips of the Pros the fit, for me, is markedly better.
The functions and the audio options of the Pros is also very useful if you/your wife will use them for a mixture of uses - calls and music.
Yes battery life isn't that of the std set but that has never caused a problem for me.
I passed my std set on to Mrs LMTTM and she loves them.
Yes the Pros are more expensive but are moar betterer - obviously IMHO.
Edit - The only time I've noticed mine falling out is when the elastic from my facemask has catapulted them into the atmosphere.
They do fall out 😉

Granted this isn't an issue for *all* users but it can be an issue. My business partner has them and he is plagued by them falling out (he never had an issue with the old ones) especially when talking on video calls.

Like every other set of in ear headphones?
FWIW, I recently ended up getting a set of the standard Air Pods (they came free with the MacBook Air I’ve just bought). I’ve never had such comfortable earphones. It is easy to just leave them in, even when you’ve stop listening. Extremely easy to pop in or take out of your ears. The little charging case is superbly functional.
I wondered about upgrading to the pros when I bought the MacBook. I already have some noise cancelling wired Shure earphones, and I find it a bit of a pain putting them in. Obviously when you do get them in, the difference in noise isolation it totally day vs night.
My son has a set of isolating earphones - and he actually leaves one ear out when he works out, because he doesn’t like how much they isolate him for the he world around him!
So my point is this - if you’re used to “normal” earphones and don’t have any specific needs, then I think the regular AirPods are fab. If you like high quality £200 headphones, or are a techy kind of person, or need to be isolated from noisy surroundings, the pros would be much betterer.
Got the standard Air Pods and they're fine for calls, listening to media on the phone. I find battery life is OK and quick to charge so have no issues with them supporting my needs through the day working from home spending most of my time on calls. However for pure music I still reach for my Bose headphones as any ear bud style product is not anywhere near as good a as a proper decent pair of over ear headphones. The Pro's are supposed to be much better for music according to friends who have them, but for me I'd rather invest in a decent pair of over ear headphones and make do with the normal Air Pods.
Have both. Standard ones fall out of my ears (like all other previous Apple ear buds) whereas the new ones stay stuck in my lugs. The noise cancelling is excellent.
Mmm, I know she has normal wired ear phones and they are ok comfort wise, but they don't have the noise cancelling. Can't say she's had issues with them falling out, and they have tips like the Pros do. She commutes by train whilst listening to music/podcasts etc.. so I guess the Pros will be miles better due to the noise cancellation.
Got a couple of weeks yet, so no rush/drama to get some ASAP
that is interesting to know as I also don't get on with the standard ear bud design!Have both. Standard ones fall out of my ears (like all other previous Apple ear buds) whereas the new ones stay stuck in my lugs.
If using on a train def get the pro's, I have some and they fit my ears unlike the normal ones (based on the wired ones that come in the box with the phone). They also have a transparency mode so it will let outside noise in better than normal earphones.

When compared to standard AirPods more people have had issues with them falling out – it's a well documented fact. I am happy for you that you don't have any issues.
As someone else that also had/had both, the pros for sure.
Not just for the noise cancellation but also the transparency mode - which lets you hear like they're _not_ in. The regular airpods aren't great on transit cos they're not a tight isolating fit, so you hear a lot of background noise and they don't go that loud. For walking around a city, or trains/planes I find the pros so much more usable. With the regulars I used to also carry a set of rubber tipped Sennheiser in-ears for noisier environments.
Also having got a high end jabra in-ear set for work, it made me appreciate how good value the pros are compared to the competion!
Fit-wise, the normal AirPods are very similar to the standard apple EarPods.
If they don’t fit well or you’re after noise cancellation, then the pros do come with different sized tips as well as a clever bit of software in iOS that lets you test out the fit.
AirPods pro all the way, ive had all iterations of the AirPods and the pro are simply amazing in use, the sound quality is superior to the standard AirPods, the noise cancellation is spooky/excellent, the transparency mode is excellent and the new spatial audio is bloody amazing, especially if watching an atmos encoded movie. Never had an issue with them falling out of my ears despite falling over a lot (bloody ms).
For sheer convenience the AirPods work so well within the apple ecosystem that you'd have to be an audiophile bore to turn your nose up at them.
I used to have the std
I bought the pros, the wife now has inherited my std ones 🙂
The Pro is the only Apple pod/headphone that doesn't fall out my ears even running. every other model has done. And I do like the noise cancellation of the Pro's.
The Pro is the only Apple pod/headphone that doesn’t fall out my ears even running.
Does anyone else use them primarily for exercise? The regular Apple earbuds are utterly useless for my ears - I honestly can't run 100m without one falling out. For that reason I never entertained the idea of AirPods.
I've got some Beats X headphones which work well with Apple stuff and stay in well (they come with loads of adaptor tip things).
So are AirPods just as good for running/ cycling?
I can't bear "in ear" headphones as a I have small ear canals and psoriasis. The Normal Air Pods have been truly excellent. I did not feel disposed towards wireless charging. I previously owned a pair of Klipsch in-ear phones that cost twice as much, were fully noise cancelling and sounded staggering. But I couldn't wear them for longer than 20 minutes. I was happy with the shape of the wired ear buds, and the Air Pods are no different in form factor.
If I could change one thing, it would be tap for volume rather than track selection.
This thread just reminded me to try out Dolby Atmos support on the Pro's with my iPhone.
Fired up Star Wars IX and tried it out - its bonkers. Like black magic.
Moving your head around, the sound relocates based on where the 'source' is - so if you turn your head to the right and the TV is on your left, the sound moves to the left in your head.
And as for shit flying over your head. MIND BLOWN.
Seriously impressive.

Hey Siri! ..... volume 110%
So are AirPods just as good for running/ cycling?
I have standard AirPods which I’ve used when running. I did have one fall out once (over around 20 runs I would guess). Certainly wouldn’t chance riding with them in.
No experience of the Pros

Have some decorum, please. I am not talking to my headphones. I have my standards. And how does that work for you when someone shouts it on a crowded train? Not that there are any at the moment.
Does depend a bit where/why you'll be using them, as has been said the Pro's have noise cancelling and better sound but I'm sticking with the standard version as I generally just use them for hands-free phone calls when working at home. Used to use them for music to when I was office-based and with people wandering up to my desk and not much background noise the convenience of the standard design was why I bought them in the first place. Those are pretty niche use cases though, most other situations the Pros are superior.
Must you stick with Apple only? You might find something better here ...
Went for the Pro's in the end. Mrs is mega chuffed and that's all that matters really.
Original question was are they worth the extra ££. Still not sure tech wise tbh, but as Mrs is happy, what else is important.
I’ve not invested in the wireless AirPods yet, I’ve got several pairs of the wired ones, including three pairs with the Lightning connector, (one pair I found on the floor of a van I was moving from Inspection at work, a good clean up with isopropanol and they’re now in use), and I’m continually impressed with just how good they sound, but there’s a lot of chatter about new versions of the standard and Pro AirPods coming out, with updated designs, where the sticky-down bit is much reduced, and I must say I’m starting to get very tempted, because so many reviews and users say how good they are.
I was a daily user of the wired ones and saw a pair of wireless airpods going for a good price second hand, picked them up over a year ago now and love them and have had no issues with falling out or battery life etc.
Dont like the look of the pro's as dont feel comfortable wearing in ear bud style headphones.
