Waiting in hospital to speak a surgeon who could well be cutting out my appendix today or tomorrow.

Anyone else had this operation?
How long was your stay in hospital?
How long before you were riding again?
Cheers

I was 13 when they took mine.

Don't remember much else. It hasn't made me faster.

Hope that helps.

Mine was removed in the summer of 77, 2 days before my 11th birthday.

Don't cough or laugh for at least a fortnight would be my advice.

[edit] I've got a 3" scar on my abdomen - I imagine they do it all with laser up your bum or something these days so the caugh/laugh advice my be superfluous.

I was 10. Had a week in hospital and a week in a convalescence home. I haven't noticed the weight loss though I did develop a taste for fish fingers.

Cheers.
But what about any middle age riders who've had it removed?

None are around to tell the tale.

[they're probably all driving home from work, cooking tea or something]

I asked my surgeon about being active. He said Pat Cash had his removed and two weeks later was at Wimbledon where he went on to win the men's singles. He said you'll soon know if you can or can't do something.

Had mine done at 35. 3 weeks off work, but just an office job nothing physical. Commuted by bike straight away when I went back...8 k each way flat. Got in a few cheeky easy mtb jaunts in last week before I went back to work too. Take it easy, and nothing too strenuous too soon.

Ask to keep it, use it to clone yourself and then send it in to do your day job while you sit around at home watching Pointless and endless pop-up ads on STW. Disco!

Same here. It taught me that trying to 'tough it out' is silly.

Think mine was the summer of '77 too, classic parenting from my folks who waited several days beyond the throwing up bile stage to decide that a doctor was perhaps necessary - who on arrival immediately whisked me to hospital (family was on holiday in France so Vaison La Romaine is now synonymous with the 'appendix episode' in my family) Just caught pre-burst.

Memories- it hurt, I was skinny for a while, having a bath was interesting, tiny scar courtesy of rather gorgeous (at least that's how my pre pubescent self remembers it) young French surgeon. 😀

Aye, ruptured appendix and peritonitis distinctly unfunny. Had a landlord once who ended up on ITU post-ruptured appendix...

I had mine out last October, at age 45. Keyhole surgery, so three little scars. Mine was not far off rupturing according to the surgeon. At no point on the day I fell ill was I in any state to be posting on STW.

I went in as an emergency on the Monday evening, this was after a paramedic assessed me on Monday lunchtime and said it was a bout of IBS. Waited in A&E reception waiting room for 7 hours, no pain killers, finally got a cubical at one in the morning, saw the surgeon at 8:30, in theatre by 9:30, woke up mid afternoon. I dozed on and off through the evening, I didn't get any sleep on Monday night, then woke up around 11ish. I then spent a second night on the commode.

If you aren't already, afterwards you will shit yourself inside out. Sorry to be so graphic.

I was off the bike for about 3 weeks. But I felt bloody rough afterwards. The incisions were fine, I just felt drained with no energy at all.

Out of interest, did you or did you not have horrendous shoulder tip pain postop?

Yes, right shoulder, from where a pectoral muscle would be if I had one, up and over and down my shoulder blade. Went after a few days. I was also quite bloated from the air they pump into you during keyhole. Again went after a day or so.

Scary thing was I was 8 and the doctor had been called out 4 times, and said its a tummy bug. Mum was sure it was appendix and insisted on another doc. I had passed out at this point and he just called the ambulance immediately.
I was very lucky and had to endure puss and blood drains coming out of my scar. Still I got my dad to promise if I made it through I wanted a Raleigh burner! He was good to his word.

I had that after a paraumbilical hernia repair - not a laparoscope/inflated belly in sight. Must admit, I hadn't expected it though I can see why/how it happens.
It was by far the most painful aspect post-op

I'd heard that from one of my juniors who'd had a lap appendicectomy.

John climber recently had mine out. Actual appendix op wasnt too bad. Small inch scar on my belly button and an even smaller half inch scar on the left of my abdomen.
Ended up back in hospital a week after as i got an abscess where the appendix was removed.
The bloating pain is weird as they blow you up with gas to do the op and that takes a few weeks to deflate.
Actual surgery pain was alright, mainly just had trouble with sitting up out of bed. And trying to poop as the cocodamol seemed to turn my turds into concrete

That's way to big for John you'll need to slam the seatpost right down if he's to reach the pedals.

One of my riding buddies had his burst and there was quite a bit of work to get all the bits out and get him well again. Off the bike for 5 weeks although he could do light exercise bike after 3 weeks. That was 4 months ago and now he's going like a train. Beat me on a 60 mile road ride and a long XC session. He's 63.

I survived it was by far the worst 48 hours (health wise) of my life.

They started key hole, but the scar I have means that it didn't work and they had to open me up instead.

I'm still to hear from the surgeon how it went, but I believe he's due on the ward later this morning.

My Father's burst and the surgeon said it was a hell of a mess.

He was out for 2 months/6 weeks from work and had antibiotics as I picked up the smell of infection luckily.

Still has a huge scar but he was pretty fat then. Now he's slimmed down, it looks minimal.

This is the extreme side O.P.

You maybe have Pat Cash 2 weeks.

Get well soon!

Had mine out years ago, thought I had pulled a muscle playing squash and carried it around for a few days before calling for the doc who sent me to hospital. Operated on immediately just prior to it bursting. Went home after a week but had an abscess which put me back in hospital. Had several weeks of having to pack an open ended abscess with gauze (about 18 inches of ribbon) until it healed from the inside out. Happened just before my birthday too!
