You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
My wife has been talking about a trip to Scotland and finding an 'idyllic' cottage/croft location for a couple of years now and given that she has been extremely 'accommodating' with my two years of MTB'ing in the US (without her) - I think it's about time I repaid that!
So I am looking for any recommendations you can give me for cottages/crofts for rent (3 day to 5 day duration), she has this 'idealisation' of the cottage being nice a secluded?
(I could take my bike as well 😉 ?? Part of the luggage innit?)
Any help would be much appreciated.
Dumfries and Galloway, Solway Coast perhaps ? It's not as "Scotlandy" as the highlands, but lots of good MTB trails.
Where do you want to be? there's plenty s/c on Knoydart, but that's pretty remote. Same on Orkney, also remote.
How far do you want to go? Amazing places by the sea up in Assynt.
And I can recommend our own place in Glen Coe, depending on dates.
tbh though when you say secluded and crofting i instinctively think north west coast or the islands.
However, there was a lovely wee row of seaside cottages right on a clifftop near st cyrus, just north of montrose on the east coast. It was easily accessible but sadly i think they are no longer in business.
Found this place whilst looking though and it looks nice :

We've booked a couple of places in Scotland through Unique Scotland
We stayed here which is one of a row of cottages and nothing else, i.e. not in a village, but not sure if you're after somewhere totally isolated?
I'd go North West Highlands and Islands aswell. Most beautiful part of GB.
There's some fabulous ones on ebygomms link dallans achleek kylesmorar use the navigation map
this was the place i was thinking of for east coast - would be a brilliant location for a home. unfortunately website is dead so no idea if its up and running again.
@laraichean - lovely place!
Where are you based? North West coast may be a bit far for a 3/5 day trip depending where you're coming from
Loads of great suggestions! It looks like its going to take me a while to go through them...but keep them coming!

Not really worried about the travel to be honest - I spend a lot of time driving. I am coming up from Devon and the reason I have said 5 days is that we will probably have an over night stay on the way up and again on the way back giving us a week away (if we have 3 days up there then we will still do the same and have 5 days away in total).
Had a week here in the summer very nice.

We had a week here: http://kingairloch.co.uk/property/9/seaview-cottage/ You can't access the cottage without a 4x4 as you need to cross a river, the Ghillie dropped us off in an Argocat thing and picked us up in a 4x4 - we left our car at the farm near other cottages. It was lovely!! We took our bikes, there is an outhouse for storage and could ride on the estate. Bikes were also useful for riding to the car at low tide. We also had the best meal Ive eated in a long time at The Boathouse which was the other side of the loch to the cottage. We walked there and back. Highly recommended.
maybe not the whole cottage thing but for remote and stunning area you cant beat

COOL!
Ive bookmakred this thread!
Not really for biking but if you really want to get away from it all try Eilean Shona. Superb, and even better if the weather's nice 😉

Im vaguely related to the owner I think, through my great aunts side.
Anyway, nice spot, secluded in the woods but views out over the moors and mountains of Dumfriesshire. Pack your bike as youre not far from some 7 stanes.
"Dumfries and Galloway, Solway Coast perhaps ? It's not as "Scotlandy" as the highlands, but lots of good MTB trails."
Whilst he could have a lovely holiday there - I suspect it might be seen as "his holiday" if she realises he is in "trail centre heaven"... not to worry there are plenty of real trails on real mountains if he takes her where she wants to go.
I could probably recommend some but your brief is too broad. Is it just for 2. Do you mind paying for a week even if only staying for 5 days. Is it in season or now? It also depends what you mean by remote/secluded. Some people would still expect to walk to a pub, whilst I would say if you ever see anybody else's car when at the cottage it's not secluded! I could suggest an island accessible only by causeway - but there are 3 other cottages so still not total isolation (and the cottages weren't that good!). I love remote/rural/secluded but actually my favourite spot is in a tiny village (one shop, one pub) at the end of a single track road. Its not that far off the "main tourist route" either - but the road is small enough that coach parties don't go there!
I think you need to see if she has a particular area in mind. e.g. if she was thinking Skye / Applecross after watching Monty Halls and you take her somewhere different she might be disapointed. You also need to narrow down your cottage spec. Are you looking for luxury in the middle of nowhere or a run down shack for the proper croft experience? If its October - April then is an open fire on dark evenings part of the appeal etc.
Isle of Harris.
Plenty to keep you happy and the best empty beaches I've seen.

If you fancy a little fishing village in the North East of scotland with one pub one shop and a cottage right beside the harbour 😉
Ha! wer'e off to Ardaneaskan on the shores of Loch Carron next week for 6 nights, & I absolutely do not care what the weather does as long as I'm not at friggin work!
The missus does care what the weather does though. 🙄
NW Scotland is where it's at, I could probly live there on my own!
Another NW highlands, Kintail.

Waterside is a cracker.
Noone's mentioned Skye yet?? I brought my mum there and stayed in a cottage (although modern had a woodburer and every board game ever made) and she thought it was heaven. My missus loved it too, but had to leave early. The seals turning every evening in the loch was the 'timekeeper' for the holiday. Also FAB biking nearbly.
Thank guys! Been away for a week and loads of response for me now to trawl through, on first glance some of them look very nice!
