Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed Apache Helicopters passing my house heading north or south. I live just South of Durham and they pretty much pass over my house, make a hell of a noise. Quite intimidating seeing them in daylight, wouldn't like to be in the receiving end of one.

Anyone else noticed this? Wonder where they come from or are going?

Have a look at adsb exchange. A flight tracker that shows up a lot of military aircraft.

They were on ADSB earlier - out of their 'normal' area.

We had two fly over Stockport in the summer - quite easy to hear something a bit 'odd' about the heli noise when working in the shed. Fantastic. They did some circuits of Manchester Airport - probably doing soft touchdowns. We also had a Super Galaxy flying round all afternoon on another day, at low altitude - didn't look quite as big as it actually is.

Can't complain, awesome sights.

On Friday at 10pm they both flew over my house near Loch Leven, and turned west along the Ochils. I looked them up on ADSB as they were low and close together. They appeared to separate on the radar with one flying over the Ochils and the other flying along the Hillfoots, but were back together near Stirling. At the same time there was another military fixed wing aircraft flying circles near the southern end of Loch Lomond, but much higher. I assumed it was an exercise. A low level night flight in helicopter must be quire a sensory experience.

There’s an exercise on going at the minute, the Apaches are operating out of RAF Leeming near Northallerton which might account for their regular appearances over the past few weeks for the OP.

They've been flying low round the Brecon Beacons today too, bloody terrifying when you see two flying along the river Usk at about 100ft up! Any flights normally stay above 300ft outside of when we're at war or the SAS selectins are on, pretty sure they were last week.

They're a very purposeful looking machine though.

They were up in Glasgow last week. One stuck about for a couple of days to get a puncture repaired.
There’s been a herc or two as well and a couple of chinooks.

That must be what I saw this afternoon driving up the A1(M). They were flying very low!

You need one of these.. Stormer HVM fitted with short range high velocity missiles, ideal for dealing with pesky attack helicopters 😀

They used to be based at RAF Dishforth, a couple of miles from me & we had them flying low all the time. I once had a T shirt with an Apache on the front & the logo said, 'Don't bother running, you'll only die tired'.

The Stormer HVM is ok as long as the Longbow doesn't get it 1st.

They used to use us for targetting practice, when we did night rides round RAF Woodbridge, that was always fun, that and the stags in breeding season always kept those rides 'interesting' 🙂

The Hawker Hunter was regularly flying loops around Spadeadam a couple of weeks ago. It regularly deviated a little so I could just about see and hear it from home. No other fast jets in the area. Would love to know what it was doing.

I live just below their flightpaths as they head North from Leeming, and work in Catterick Garrison...we see them plenty. My second fave thing EVER (after standing underneath an airborne Vulcan bomber flying about 200ft above my head as a kid), was watching 4 Apaches in formation with 6 Chinooks practicing fast landings and take off with the Apaches as air cover....all in a field at the back of my old house a few years ago

I'm just up the north Tyne Valley at the moment, had them flying right above the village on several occasions at just above the tree line.

We also had some of those funky helicopters that look like little prop planes when flying but they are able to rotate those propellers vertically to take off like a helicopter. What would those be?

My dad used to work up on the Otterburn ranges as a communications technician. He told me when practicing shooting (big guns) they would typically only cordon off the take off area and target and you could be moving around or working in the area in between as they whistled overhead 😳

If you look on at the OS map with Kielder forest drive on it just south of the drive near Berrymoor Edge there’s a danger area in the middle of nowhere. I was told by a Park Ranger this was an artillery firing point to fire into the ranges. Thing is this would be firing over the A68 which seemed unreal but from what your dad says possible? Bet the public driving up the road didn’t realise.

I'm north on of Winchester and we see a few, last year we had a mid summer afternoon "Airwolf" type incident where on rose up from behind the pine trees at the end of of the field. Honestly thought Ww4 was on...

V-22 Osprey

My fatha-in-law works range control up at Otterburn, and their house overlooks a couple of the AS90 firing stations.

@anyexcusetoride they're ospreys, come over my house in the South lakes reasonably often. When we "lost" two 7 tonne excavators in butterburn flow a few years back the spadeadam lot were using them for target practice (not shooting just buzzing overhead) whilst I was trying to explain to the natural England bod our harebrained scheme to extract them. Created a useful diversion from the total bollocks I was telling her.

During the first Gulf war I lived in Germany and I distinctly remember coming home from school on the bus and seeing a swarm of around 3 of them passing us at low level, it was amazing.

China or Iran. My moneys on Iran, China is a world power with all the toys, and the US prefer to stick to agricultural workers.

I saw two Apaches come over the South Downs a couple of years ago. From a distance I thought they'd be a long way up, but pretty much stayed level so were very low where I was on top above Storington. Beastly.

Had a C-17 go over the house 3 times last week on the way into Gatwick. Not usually under a flightpath. Never seen one before so hadn't previously appreciated a few things. Firstly it looks nothing like a airliner, secondly the tail is enormous, third the RAF really sling transport planes into tight turns.

Had one low over Birmingham a few weeks back. The sound tells you it's something unusual. 🙂

I live next to MOD Stafford and we get them flying over and circling sometimes. AS they're flying in and out they're low and pretty scary looking. Sometimes get Chinooks and Puma's too.

I read a book about the RAF Apache pilots in Afghanistan. It was called "Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned" 😀

Remember seeing one flying along a valley next to the A9 near Pittlochry. It was right alongside the road. I might have sped up a bit to keep up with him!
