I ordered a laser range finder (for golf) from aliexpress - the value was £35 quid. I've had a 'there's a fee to pay' card from royal mail which says there is a fee to pay of £35.41.

My understanding is that goods under 135 didn't attract customs fees, so only VAT would be applicable. I paid the VAT fee at source and have the invoice saying this. They've also charged me a £8 handling fee.

How do I tell them they've got it wrong and only pay the correct amount? As far as I can see the correct amount is £0 as there was never any handling to be done in the first place.

Speak to the post office and see what they say ?

Or look here

Thats for Europe - it's €135 limits. Buying from AliExpress ie china it comes under different rules...

Not according to this page https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-duty

Customs Duty
You’ll be charged Customs Duty on all goods sent from outside the UK (or the UK and the EU if you’re in Northern Ireland) if they’re either:

excise goods
worth more than £135

I've only been charged VAT tho (more VAT than the thing cost! and i've already paid it)

How important is this to you? If just a nice to have them contact supplier claiming it hasn't arrived and you'd like a refund and see if you get lucky.
Don't pay it or collect, does it get sent back or destroyed?
Or if it means something to you, pay the amount and then fill out the claim back form and see what you get.
All the above isn't helpful but since we did the monumental nosedive, it seems to be complete randomness with any charges if getting stuff outside Europe...complete headache.

Not that important but I figure if I can get the money back and it only costs me 8 quid it's not the end of the world.

I've now got the package. It's been marked (by post NL by the looks of things) as having a value of 170 dollars. Why would the sending inflate the value of the goods? I can see why they'd reduce it.

Is the seller’s shipping paperwork correct? I bought something from the US last year and the seller put too high a value on the shipping invoice, so the import tax/VAT I was charged was higher than it ought to have been. The shipping invoice is the key thing.

If the seller’s docs are correct, then it looks like a weird f-up by NL post, but you ought to be able to get it back.
