MCJnr has ended up with a year's free subscription to Apple TV - is there anything on there worth watching?
I enjoyed The Morning Show, well acted and somewhat topical in terms of the Me Too movement.
Mythic quest - ravens banquet is worth a watch, as is "for all mankind"
+1 for TMS
I watched a bit of the Beastie Boys docu, that was okay.
TBH, I got a 12 month back in Nov, even by Apple's level of style over substance, there ain't much there.
We liked The Morning Show and just now watching Defending Jacob.
Thanks for the replies - we had a quick flick through, couldn't see much that was obvious, thought I'd save some pain by asking around first!
Another TMS fan here. We watched Truth be Told as well - it was OK but nothing special.
Enjoyed the Beastie Boys doc.
They're going to have to beef up their roster a bit if they want people to pay a sub though.
+1 for For All Mankind. It was brilliant.

To be fair, though, Netflix and Amazon Prime have had a bit of a head start. Not that I’m watching any of them.
Another +1 for For All Mankind. Slow to the party, I know.
Ted Lasso is brill
The kids and my wife adored Wolfwalkers, (I had post ride snooze through it so can’t comment)
And another +1 For All Mankind. First class, and season 2 is currently underway.
If you’re into your electronic music, there’s a docu on the history of the Roland TR-808. If you’re not, you might still like it if you’re a nerdy engineer type
Ted Lasso was great, and the movie Greyhound. glad were on a free trial tho, bugger all else on for us. couldnt get into TMS.
Every time I look it seems you have to pay for everything!
What's the point of a subscription TV service if you then have to pay again to watch anything decent. Got it free with my iPhone last year and I won't be renewing.

You're doing something wrong then! It's all included in the subscription.
Watched, and really enjoyed the Bilie Eilish documentary at the weekend.

So the "rent this film for £3.99, this film for £4.99 - latest film for £5.99" is in my imagination? I've looked and there's very little included in the sub.
That's not AppleTv+ - that's just the rental/purchase stuff that's been there for years. The TV+ bit (your free subscription) is their own content: For All Mankind, Greyhound, Morning Show...
To be fair, there's not an awful lot there but might be worth a few series worth a watch while it's free.
Got it free with my iPhone last year and I won’t be renewing.
Interesting, I bought an iPhone last year, don't recall any TV offer - not that I'd probably watch anything....
I'm with @the-muffin-man here. The TV app doesn't differentiate very well between stuff you can buy/rent and stuff you can just watch. I'm used to netflix, disney etc just letting you open up and watch, so having to sift between paid/included content is a pain.
Back to the OP - I liked THe Morning Show and the Beasties doc. Nothing else has really appealed though.
Open Apple's TV app;

Doesn't seem too hard (iPad app, very similar. Apple TV app, there's "ATV+" tab at the top).
Watched, and really enjoyed the Bilie Eilish documentary at the weekend.
Same. Thought I'd watch for 30 mins late on Saturday, we ended up sat up into the early hours.
The wildlife progs are good too. Tiny World? Apple does seem to devote more bandwidth to their service, so the quality is pretty amazing.
Ted Lasso another fave, For All Mankind, Morning Show, Mythic Quest, Greyhound, Long Way Up all worth a watch. Couldn't get into See.
Amazon Prime has a mix of subscription and paid content as well. To be fair to Apple (and Amazon) they have SO much content you can buy, I wouldn't expect it all to be included with a subscription. The content owners wouldn't let them anyway.
the offer has been on for a while, pretty sure it's for any iDevice, got it with a phone & iPad last year, you've probably just deleted the emails they've been sending you without actually reading them 😂Interesting, I bought an iPhone last year, don’t recall any TV offer – not that I’d probably watch anything….
as above, there's now a tab that you can use to see only the included (free) content. When you use Siri voice search in the main interface, it often brings up a paid option (even if I have access to a different app where I can watch the same thing for free!) which is really annoying I agree.I’m with @the-muffin-man here. The TV app doesn’t differentiate very well between stuff you can buy/rent and stuff you can just watch.
I have the Apple One+ bundle now so not too fussed about how much content is on there at the moment, the stuff I have watched has been really high quality though. As mentioned, the Beastie Boys doc is top notch. Also, the new Fraggle Rock is brilliant! 😃 (Rather than going down the CGI route that a lot of people seem to take when bringing back old kids shows, it's still done with muppets, in fact is indistinguishable from the old show except it's in 4K and the Fraggles are social distancing 🤣)

Netflix manage it. And you can argue Apples pockets are deeper than Netflix's. Apples offering is poor value in comparison.
I don't mind the mix on Prime as Prime is so much more than just TV.
Netflix manage it.
Netflix don't have the catalogue you can buy from Apple/iTunes or Amazon.

I've bought/rented most of my movies from Apple in the past, where I couldn't be bothered with a DVD. They have a lot more for sale/rent than just TV. The stuff you can get from them is pretty much endless... just like Amazon. They still sell/rent all the new Star Wars and Disney movies, for example...
The Netflix model is simple to understand, the value to that for some people is obvious... but Apple and Amazon offering both subscription services and still being shops for purchase/rental does mean you can get a lot more stuff with having to sign up to many different subscription services.
Apples offering is poor value in comparison.
- The original free year they gave people has been extended twice. It is now up to 21 months I believe.
- I have the Apple One+ sub (it was the same price as the other subs I was already paying them for family music, cloud storage etc). They are now crediting me back £4.99 a month due to the free TV+ period extension.
The basic premise for me is - if I subscribe to something I don't want to have to sift through what is included in my sub and what isn't. Apple may have changed their interface now, but finding included stuff was difficult with paid content pushed to the fore.
Just clicked on TV+ Originals tab and there are 11 - count them 11 - drama series to watch.

Probably because cancellation rate is very high! 🙂

Agreed. I used to hate it before Prime sorted this out with the "only show me what is included" button. I never found I had an analogous problem with Apple TV+ for whatever reason.
I'm not sure cancellation is really a concern as I can't imagine significant numbers of people are paying at the moment. I think this is an acknowledgement of the lack of content - I presume it was planned for much more content by now but covid put paid to that. Of their limited material the number winning multiple awards is pretty impressive, which bodes well for the future.
the offer has been on for a while, pretty sure it’s for any iDevice, got it with a phone & iPad last year, you’ve probably just deleted the emails they’ve been sending you without actually reading them
I bet I've unsubscribed, that's my normal default email response to just about everything now!
if only there was a button to filter out the low-budget dross that I would never watch, of which there is a HUGE amount on Prime and also to a lesser extent on Netflix. If Apple choose to focus on less, high quality, original content, than might not be the worst thing in the world!!The basic premise for me is – if I subscribe to something I don’t want to have to sift through what is included in my sub and what isn’t.

With Apple TV+ I just go on the premise that if it's a film you've heard of chances are it's not free...
you’re confusing Apple TV+ (Their premium subscription service, everything is included at no extra charge when you subscribe) with the Apple TV app, which aggregates content from ALL the streaming apps you have access to (including stuff available for purchase/rental, which as mentioned they have always offered through iTunes etc). With Apple TV+ I just go on the premise that if it’s a film you’ve heard of chances are it’s not free…
Admittedly they have made it as confusing as possible though 🤣
I must be ****ing thick! I'm browsing on my phone and the only included films I can see are the Apple Originals - of which there are 13.
Go to Watch Now > Click on Films > and all are for rental or purchase.
I'm an Apple Fanboi since the IIfx days, so not an Apple basher by any means.
Yeah, I don’t think a big library of classic movies à la Prime/Netflix is part of the master plan. When you click Watch Now, that’s not ATV+, it’s just an interface to what used to be known as the iTunes Store.

Yep, two different services 1) Apple Tv+ (their originals) 2) Films for rent/purchase from the iTunes store (I think it still is called that even though iTunes does not exist as software on a Mac anymore!)
That is all in the "TV" app, but as above what it also tries to do is tell you via what service you can watch whatever you search for. Big issue here is that Netflix has declined to integrate.
Then of course there is "Apple TV" the hardware product.
OK, yes, it is pretty confusing!
It’s a bit crap at the moment but they’re making the Slough House series with Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, which should be ace.
For All Mankind … oh my!
I’m warming to Apple TV
I am on a free trial that never seems to end.
I’ve enjoyed The Morning Show, Ted Lasso, Mythic Quest and the Billie Eillish documentary. I still don’t know if I will pay for a subscription but I will have a look at For Mankind that has been mentioned on here.
I loved For All Mankind. No spoilers here but the last episode was excellent.
thanks to this thread, and the offer of going to Apple one, I started watching Ted Lasso - series 1 was not perfect, but a very enjoyable story arc and some genuinely superb LOL moments.
Series 2 starts today! Whoop!
This reminds me; I've got a free 3-months as well, which I need to activate as it's about to expire. There's a sci-fi thing coming out in September, which looks interesting. An Asimov adaptation, so it could be good, or it could be shit (Will Smith in I, Robot).

I actually use an Apple TV 4k as the main TV receiver, after our previous 'set top box' went on the spritz. Why do they still call them 'set top' boxes? Ever tried to balance one on a modern TV? Falls off. Instant fail.
All 3 of the Ewan Mcgregor long way down, round and up are on there. Good lunchtime watching when wfh.
