Looking at the lone working apps about and their subscriptions. Don't think it's required to have a web interface so was looking for an app which would simply message either an email address or text a couple of phone numbers with info.
Ideally I'd be looking for the following:
select up to 5 phone numbers to alert to.
check in to site message
adjustible timer for future checkin prompts and check in prompt requiring an 'ok' button press.
amber alert to top 3 contacts after user defined time
red alert to all contacts after user defined time.
all message details to include:
start/check in/end detail.
GPS location
battery status
Phone signal status
login time
Thats it.
sounds simple, but the app creators I've looked at don't offer that level of functionality as they rely on pre existing permissions I think.
any help appreciated.
So.. just to check I've got the requirements right..
You define a number of contacts
Check in on the app
After a configurable time after checkin; it prompts to confirm you're still there/alive.
A preset time after that it sends an amber alert (assuming the user didn't check in) - presumably so the contacts can try and make contact.
After another period of no check in it sends a red alert - presumably so that people can go and find out whats going on / contact emergency services ?
My only worry would be - what happens in the event of battery failure ? Or the user goes out of signal range ? Given this is 'confidence' inspiring; I'd suggest it might be worth having a co-ordinating server that sends out the alerts; that way the users can be notified with a 'last known' location and be told how long since the app made contact with the server ?
What kind of environment are you envisioning it being used in ?
I'm potentially interested 😉
well, yep, that's about right.
The battery status will be given if possible, so if it looks like the battery is low on last check in a sensible human can judge whether or not there is a problem. or prompt the user to charge their phone.
we may issue battery pack emergency chargers to all who lone work.
Ok; I guess reporting the battery status on checkin could be a reasonable workaround - I guess the app could prompt the user to re-charge if it was below (say) 25% on check in ?
Could maybe even force the user if you wanted - prohibit checkin below x% of battery unless it's plugged into a charger ?
Is this for a company or a personal project ? What's the timescales ?
Steve
it's for a company, not urgent, just been mentioned to me if I knew how to build an app or knew anyone who did. STW has someone for everything...
🙂
Ok; well it sounds like I could help - drop me an e-mail (in profile) if you want to take this further 🙂
Steve
Awesome, ta.
Someone on here made something very similar to what you want.

I remember that one - it's location based rather than time based tho..
I work in the NHS. Please let me know if this goes anywhere as it sounds ideal for Community Nurses
If no-one else is writing this, I don't mind having a go. (I did the HereIam app) email is on profile.
I've thought about this sort of thing before. Mrs P gets called whenever her night shift guy falls asleep and doesn't report in to some central office every two hours. I employ a bunch of mobile developers. I think you need to make the outgoing calls from a server, otherwise some of the scenarios you are trying to mitigate against will go unnoticed (because the phone has no signal, has been damaged in an accident, etc). Whilst it requires slightly more tech capability it is potentially not much more work/cost. You would want your servers running on mirrored servers with failpver protection to ensure continuous cover.
You may also want to look at it automatically starting the shift too. I think it would also be useful to track accelerometer data which might suggest that the phone was motionless (or had been left unattended whilst the person was elsewhere!).
I actually think that checking in every x hrs is a pretty shit way of looking after lone workers and you need to ask why would the person bother and how do you ensure a proportionate response when it doesn't happen (Mrs p, immediately assumes he's fallen asleep rather than fallen down the stairs!)
I thought you could make use of the notifications on google calendars. It means you'll only get emails but it'd be pretty easy and quick get something working.
You could probably do all that in Tasker.
Would be quite involved though, but you could build it up in chunks.
Is it possible to integrate this with, say, strava - autoreply feature if you're on a big segment ?
