Microsoft Security Essentials/Windows Defender. Highly regarded and free. I wouldn't touch Norton myself, once you get rid of it you should see a nice performance increase!

MSE is all you need, unless you're still running XP. In which case, Avast free is perfectly adequate if you pair it with Malwarebytes for the occasional scan.

I use Avast on my laptop, Mac and Android phone.
As far as I can tell I'm not dead yet.

Norton is worse than a virus.

Avast is good and free (just make sure you keep selecting the Free one and don't go for the Paid version that it frequently "recommends")

But a lot of people are using Microsoft Security Essentials these days.

I've used Avast and Malwarebytes for years, with no issues. I Just run a scan with Malwarebytes every so often.

... which is the right thing to do if you're running Windows 7. On Windows XP it no longer receives updates, so a third party solution would be a better choice.

Read a recent review of av just can't remember where. It ranked Mse very poorly. Personally use avg and malwarebytes

I'd rather have an AV solution which is unintrusive and works rather than one designed to top ranking tables.

Generally only used by corporates hence not in the lists as far as I know, but the base AV and Web Filtering features are free. Unintrusive and works :-).

If it matters the Avast! is generally well regarded as was ranked by AV Comparatives as (one of) "Top Ranked Product" in their annual summary: http://www.av-comparatives.org/summary-report-december-2013/

Microsoft asked to be included in that test but said they should only be considered as a baseline, not as serious competition.

Can't say I find Avast to be too intrusive by the way. Mostly just a little tray icon that pops up once a year to get me to renew my free license.

Avast is great, used it for years and have installed it on many many PCs.

Just remember to select the free version and read all of the installation boxes carefully so you don't install the bloat ware.
