As most people I have my fair share of issues with the Hub3 so I currently have it in modem mode using an archaic Apple time machine with Airport.
I'm liking the idea of being able to combine 5 & 2.4ghz on the same network & letting the rougher take the strain, I don't have issues with the range (apart from in the garden which a range extender currently takes care of) but all the reviews say its basic. I can't deal with basic, sounds just my kind of thing but should I be worried its made by HUAWEI?
Can I get better for not much more, say £100 or even £150 & what would that bring to the party that the Honor3 doesn't?
I am sorry that I have reached an age when tech doesn't interest me that much, but I do value STW's input.
As always TYIA.
I don’t have any experience with that particular product, but an alternative you could consider is run the virgin hub in router mode with wireless disabled and invest in a decent wireless access point, something like a unifi AP. You’ll get a massively better AP than is built into the router and if you can mount it properly, a better all round signal. Plus points for buying more than one and spreading around the home if you need more coverage. I think a basic AC model can be had for sub £100 these days.
I have a netgear orbi mesh with the hub 3 in modem mode. I gained 40mbps on speedtests... you can get the 2 hub version for about £100 on amazon and it's worked perfectly.
Thank you both.
I got a TP-Link Deco with three units recently for £100 and it has worked perfectly with my Virgin Hub 3 (which I simply switched to modem mode) - the whole lot only took about 15 minutes to set up. I get 100+mbps across the whole house without issues with four of us at home and about 15 devices connected - when I was using the Hub as a router I was getting anything from 80mbps to <2mbps depending on its mood.
If you go with the Unifi solution don't forget POE injectors to avoid the need for power at the access point.
