Absolutely toxic place. Horrible to know the complete Tuesdays that surround you locally!

I had to leave after a militant dog walking anti cyclist started pulling me in to pointless and bizarre arguments.

Full of utter mentalists, but not in an amusing way.

I have it, ours constantly has reports of missing cats/dogs/tortoises and random arguments spouting from seemingly inoffensive posts - amusing for a bit but soon gets boring.

militant dog walking anti cyclist

Yeah, I know who you mean and she's completely mad.

The whinging about the road closures for the commonwealth games on Nextdoor was predictably epic (which I didn't actually see her joining in with, perhaps as it's just mountain bikers that she really hates), but now they've gone on to complaining about the maggots in their new council supplied food waste caddies. Then the sanctimonious crowd chip in with suggestions that if they ate their food instead of throwing it away they wouldn't get maggots, and then it all kicks off. It can be entertaining, but also quite depressing.

The passive aggressive posting of “the woman who pulled out on me” or “the bloke in the blue Golf who drives around with his window down and music on too loud who frightens my dog”

I live Nextdoor to mentalists.

Sounds terrible, exactly like local Facebook groups. Thanks for flagging another internet cesspit to avoid.

Do you wonder if Tim Berners-Lee knew what the internet would become he'd have quietly just unplugged everything and gone to the pub instead?

Thanks for flagging another internet cesspit to avoid.

And also mostly this..

Do you wonder if Tim Berners-Lee knew what the internet would become he’d have quietly just unplugged everything and gone to the pub instead?

🙄😕

Aware enough to know his name, yet not quite enough to know what exactly his gift to the world was... 😀

'Spotted' Facebook groups are funny and uplifting - they give you that 'I'm not actually a **** but really quite grounded' feeling! 🙂

TBL ??? his gift to the world was inventing the internet....

I lurk on nextdoor, its quite useful to know which house/shed/car has been robbed in the local area to keep you on your toes and remember to lock up. Either crime is massively up, or its just the site is providing a way to raise awareness

There is alot of random moaning. Some old chap seems to link every moan back to council workers still working from home post covid and refusing to go into the office....

It does / did do some really dodgy stuff like send postcards to your neighbours using your name saying you invited them to join. Not sure if that still happens. Its definitely not one I would be using if there was a viable local community one which covered stuff like crime, road closures, events etc...

Sounds amazing. I think I'll sign up with a sock puppet account when I get home.

No it wasn't.

for 99.9% of people 'the internet' is a ubiquitous enough term that that statement is correct.

no-one talks to the the other 0.1%.

I thought loads of the internet wasn’t the World Wide Web. Like 4% of the internet can’t be found through a search engine

Logged on, had a look around, deleted account.
I have no interest in Erie down the road ranting about rubbish or dog walkers or whatever.

We've had a couple of them, I assumed it was instigated by the neighbour who wanted to set the group up. Is that not the case? Wow, that is flakey.

Think I'll sign up with a fake account though, sounds like fun. 😁

I'm surprised if it's that low? E-mail, ftp, VPN's etc?

QUESTION.

As I deleted my aka acct. 4 mins after joining, would I still be sent a postcard.

I'd feel really left out if not. 😜

It still does, I just signed up and selected this option. Looking forward to my neighbours getting invite cards from Nigel Frogface in the near future!

I joined a local Facebook in the hopes of getting some local info...Jesus, I think I lasted one evening after being questioned about where I lived (not believed) about how long I'd lived there (not long enough, apparently) and what was I think telling them that I rode a MTB...

Some bits of the internet should come with warning labels.

Thanks, Sir Tim.

Not much happening on my Nextdoor. I was expecting some florid anti-cyclist ranting. 🙁

Maybe you guys would like to update Wikipedia if you are suggesting TBL isn’t credited with inventing the internet.

It isn’t. Ask TBL next time you meet him.

I think I will skip...

We have a residents association that is reputedly the oldest in the country, that was pretty good at organising residents for us to vote for instead of party line at local elections. We have a magazine.

That's where the good stops. The FB page is pretty awful anti-bike, anti-fun etc

What happened to having a big old argument in the street like we did in the 70's in my steet? 🙂

It's not even a geeky niche arguement it's a fact. The world wide web is just one component (that originated with one particular protocol) of the internet as a whole.

Just read a post on our local Nextdoor group going on about the toxic pedantry and inane arguements on some site called 'Singletrack World'. Looks like one to avoid...
