Looking at their £10 bundle - seems a great offer.

Any downsides? Easy move?

Currently on 02 so no issues with unlocking the phone - assume I just need a new sim and a PAC code? Or do I even need that?

I think that's why the OP said no problems with unlocking the phone, just getting SIM + PAC (possibly, most likely in fact).

Don't know, but have just sent off for the SIM with intention of setting up daughter with the £5 bundle.

so will keep checking the the thread!

Gift gaff uses O2 network but that doesn't make it O2 so some items need to be unlocked their pricing is very good, was thinking of getting a dongle to use with my Mac.

They use the network and I know this - which is why I don't need to unlock. o2 themselves can't get close to the GiffGaff deal (£15.50 a month for a 24 month contract and only 100mb of data compared to 250 mins a month and unlimited data).

Both myself and the OH are on GiffGaff. It's a really good service and definitely the cheapest deal around.

The only issues we've had were the general service outage when one of their suppliers got flooded (not their fault) and an issue with processing a goodybag. We had to be quite rude to one of the agents about the latter before they would sort it out but it was no worse than you'd expect from a big company.

I will certainly never go back onto contract with one of the big retailers.

So how easy is the buying credit? I assume they don't just take a DD and you have to manually buy credit?

i see they do auto top up - if you sign up to a goodybag does this mean i dont need to do anything with it after that and itll auto goodybag each month like a contract ?

tempted by the 10 quid package also as i have a work mobile now that im allowed to use for personal but not data(rendering iphone useless, (that and its nice to at weekends just leave the works phone off on the side)

can i tether my ipad to my iphone and make use of the unlimited internet on giffgaff?

tempted to order a microsim and try it for a month see what signals like

They are O2, they have the same address, 260 Bath Road in Slough. About 100 yds from where I'm sat.

There has been quite a lot of complaint about them pretending to be an independently run/owned business etc.

Proceed with caution! I've been lucky and mine works fine also their forum is useful if a bit cluttered, it is easy to buy credit. You set 1 goodybag to start after the other which accounts for most of your calls etc, then you top up say £10 which is used for MMS messaging. If you have imessage or whatsapp then that is free with the free data. On the other hand my friend bought a goodybag and has not received any service what so ever, he may as well have burnt the tenner, the agents are unhelpful.

Personally I would look at Tesco as you get unlimited BT openzone service which sounds good as the 3G in the UK is average, where as I often pick up BT openzone service.

A Giff Gaff SIM works out of the box in my O2 locked iPhone

I quite like them, they do spam the **** out of you though once you show an interest or buy a SIM

They are o2, not just using the o2 network. o2 funds it - and have committed to it for a certain time frame. What happens at the end of that, god knows, but for now, they offer very good pricing. Support is all user-driven with only a handful of 'employees' in order to sort out the nitty gritty.

Since getting a giffgaff sim in my biking phone, I've not had any spam off them.

On my iPhone the network ID comes up as 'O2' with the GiffGaff SIM in, on other phones it comes up as 'giffgaff'

nothing seems to come close for value at the moment.

everyone that gives good data wants to pile on the minutes and texts - 100 minutes , 500 texts and unlimited data would suit me better ....

To be honest I don't care whether they are 02 or not - I just want a cheap deal that works for me.

And (as usual) it is very difficult to work out from the responses whether or not I should risk it.

a few months ago, you couldn't use the data included with the bundle as a 'hotspot' or for tethering, only on the device which was connected to giffgaff. might have changed now, but I doubt it now they do seperate data-only sims.

Three do 300 minutes, 3000 texts and All-you-can-eat data (including tethering) for £15/month SIM only. Not exactly PAYG; but it's only 30 days notice to cancel the contract.

off to three to see ......

always avoided them before - they actually any good - always had really good treatment from 02 - till last year when i went sim only , they took a major strop that i didnt buy my iphone through them at a cost of an extra 200 quid compared to buying it outright - used to have a really good contract with unlimited data but they wouldnt give me a micro sim on the same contract. SODS

Steer well clear of Three, the get sod all reception in a building as they work on a different wave length to the others.

I gave giifgaff a weeks notice to port my number, so it work fine. Tesco really does look good at the mo, although granted giffgaff is £3 cheaper.

ive recently moved from voda to giffgaff and can definitely recommend it myself. £10 per month unlimited data/texts and i think its 250 or 300 mins, cant remember. good enough for me. i ported my number without problems and its running smoothly so far.

they dont allow tethering on that tho, you have to buy a seperate data only goodybag for tethering.

any probs, the users on the forum seem especially quick to try and answer, as they can earn themselves 'kudos points' for helping people. what that earns them im not sure, but people seem to be falling over themselves to answer problems 🙂

One point is one penny so you can chop points in for airtime.

If you get through to the O2 retention team they might offer you a deal. I got something comparable to GiffGaff - similar calls and texts only with less data. But O2 allow tethering which was the clincher for me. Plus I get 5 quid off my O2 broadband - so it works out costing me about £6.50 a month. Not too shabby.

GiffGaff customer service are a joke - took several months to resolve a problem. Had to resort to twitter-ing them to get any response (don't think they like problems being made public). Got there in the end but it soured things for me so I wouldn't use them again.

You can cut a SIM card to be 'micro'. Either buy a cutter for a few quid or just trim it with a sharp blade.

Reception is very much a local issue. To test any network, I'd recommend buying the cheapest PAYG SIM and taking it to the places that you spend the most time. Me getting poor/good reception near me is almost irrelevant to you.

For a dongle I got a 3 simcard/monthly contract, £15/month for 10gb which is way better than the giffgaff 3gb for £12.50, also the giffgaff sims won't work in tablets/dongles as it's only 'unlimited internet' for phone usage levels, i.e. fairly small.

its the hassle of moving numbers

It's a 30s to 1 minute phone call.

"can I have a PAC number please?"

"why are you leaving?"

"better deal elsewhere."

"ok, you'll get a text shortly with it"

"ta, bye!"

Then enter it in the right place when you port. The port happens pretty quick these days too, done it a few times, never been much of a hassle.

If a customer service agent doesnt give you a PAC code on the phone or within 2 hours they are in breach of OFCOM regulations.

Similarly, if the port hasnt been completed within 24 hours they also can face charges.

+1
Nope, no option with Giffgaff, it won't even let you past the option on the iphone to try (un-jailbroken phone)... the only real annoyance I have with them. Been with them for 2 years or so, and only had two outages, as mentioned above (3rd party suppliers flooding)

Tesco's and Giffgaff both use 02's network BTW

BS. See http://www.solwise.co.uk/3g-intro.htm for the frequency bands used by the various networks - about half way down that page is the spectrum diagram. As you can see, 3 uses 1920-1935 MHz and 2110-2125 MHz, whilst O2 (Giff-Gaff/Tesco) uses 1935-1945 MHz and 2125-2135 MHz. Not a lot of difference in the frequencies used there, and there's really not going to be a significant difference in propagation (if anything there will be more difference between O2 and Orange than O2 and 3).

Been with 3 for over 4years never had a problem with the Network, wifes on with them too.

Works phone is on with O2 and signal coverage where I live is easily on a par with and better than O2 in some places.

Been inside the NEC in Birmingham all today for a conference and no problem picking up a signal with 3 in there.
