Hi,

My gym has just closed. It was a big part of my life and the other gyms within sensible cycling distance do not offer the same range of features.

Although I did some independent workouts at the old gym what I enjoyed most was the group training classes. There is an F45 training studio near me which has piqued my interest. It is something that originated in Australia and the idea is you do standardised 45 minute classes which can be cardio, strength or HIIT based.

I like the idea of this but it seems almost impossible to get information about how much it costs to join. I emailed the local studio and was advised that they have lots of options and that the best approach would be a two week trial during which we would discuss my preferences and a program with costs would be created.

This was frustrating as there is a certain amount I am willing to spend on a monthly health program and if F45 greatly exceeds this the whole exercise would be a waste of time.

Is anyone here an F45 member (or know one) and can provide some information about what they pay?

F45 is sort of crossfit rebranded.

Like Crossfit, small class sizes mean overheads per client are very high, so it's very expensive to run one.

They normally will only tell you the prices as part of a 1 to 1 sales pitch. I would guess around £200/£250 a month, depends where in the country you are.

Most gyms work on selling 1000s of memberships and rely on the fact that most people never show up, but still pay their DD every month. If you take away all those people who never show, the economics change quite a bit.

Mrs kilo did a few sessions with them - expensive and quite repetitive, more so than classes at a normal gym. A few near us have shut whilst normal gyms are increasing in number. Mrs Kilo eventually joined one of the big 24/7 gym groups - more kit, she can train when it suits her and free classes for a lot more than f45 charge. I think the plan she was looking at was over £50 pcm, possibly £75, either way she canned the idea. As you noticed quite keen on get you in and then hard sell which is not a good look imo.

That's a normal mass market gym price in the South East!

Posher ones, eg David Lloyd, would be another 50% on that.

My old CF gym was around £150 about 6 years ago (it still couldn't make end meet and folded).

We have an F45 near us, it's an a super prime location, brand new building right next to the main Train Station. Their rent must be insane....

Thanks for the responses.  The F45 near me (Cheltenham) is also in a prime location but very convenient for my workplace.

£75 per month would be approaching my top limit of £80 per month.

The JD Gym that most members of my old gym have migrated to does have classes but the times do not work - 06:15 is just too early for me!

F45 is sort of crossfit rebranded.

The costs and model may be similar to crossfit, but the training is very different.

I did a trial week (when they used to be free) at F45, it wasn't for me. There's no real strength training, just 45 minutes of circuits with large numbers of people in the class working round stations. There are coaches who facilitate the session, but no coaching as such.

There are lots of similar HIIT classed based gyms now and many crossfit gyms are now offering classes which aren't "crossfit".

Hyrox seems to be flavour of the month which could be worth looking into if you enjoy the cardio side of it.

My CrossFit box (I hate that term) is £70 per month for 3 classes per week and that is here in the lovely SE. It seems to be thriving, some of the prices quoted above seem on the steep side.  I expect F45 to be similar in pricing.

Not really, I live in sw London and  train near home and in central London and pay£32 pcm for access to my local 24/7 and can mix n match any three others in the company portfolio I wish. If I struck with one gym it’d be under thirty quid iirc (and this is for a big well equipped gym).

There is a new class of 24/7 almost zero staff gyms which are much cheaper.

Edit: Just looked up some prices in Cambridge:

My local Nuffield Health is £71 / month which is more traditional gym. Lots of staff and classes. Was around £45 pcm when I used to go there over 10 years ago.

Our local David Lloyd is £154 pcm for basic package but access at peak time, apparently their most popular package (premium) is £197pcm!

At the other end, The Gym Group is £23 pcm.

Presuming this is The Gym Group - I used to be a member so I could drop in wherever was convenient when I was working round different sites in London. Some are purpose built facilities with big free-weight areas, decent kit, multiple squat racks, and dedicated class space. Others are repurposed old buildings with insufficient space and minimal equipment. I believe Pure is the same.

If your local is a modern one it'll be far superior to Nuffield, Virgin, Fitness First etc (disregarding pools/spas) at a fraction of the price.

Thanks for the responses - really useful.

My local crossfit gym is £95/month for three sessions per week. It is a bit too far away for me though.

I wonder if F45 apply a similar times per week pricing model.
