I did about 3 years ago. They were quite happy to operate but a knee person said there's no movement in the knee so leave it. Medical friends have also said that knee ops are best avoided.
It might be unrelated but this year my knee has had a constant ache.
So any stories about ops and results or other people who have left it alone would be welcome.

Operation done by the Jonathan Webb Clinic in Bristol in late 2004 and physic for 6 months through the clinic with Geoff Clarke (now Queensland Reds Head Physio I believe). Service pre op and post op from clinic and Physio absolutely first class. Worked my ass off in post op doing everything the Physio said, it still took 6 months before I was allowed to run properly and change direction.

Knee still gives me grief but that is more down to the fact I have no cartilage left in it - in terms of stability I feel as though the knee is way more stable than it was pre op and it doesn't give way anymore.

Main sports are cycling and golf now having given rugby up due to the swelling soreness that came with having no cartilage.

I had mine operated on and apart from the long physio and working at it, its been fantastic. BUT my knee was utterly useless before the op, atleast once a week it would give way and leave me sitting on the floor somewhere in agony unable to walk. Very annoying. If your knee isn't doing this then maybe its ok?

Its gave out twice when running. Was always rubbish at running so no longer run. Breast stroke is also out.
My knee always gave me grief before I tore the acl so this may just be part of growing old. 47!

+1 albanach. snapped acl in my knee about 12 yrs ago through BMX dirt jumps gone wrong. It hurt like nothing ever before and every subsequent injury to the knee was just as painful. NHS Southmead fixed it after 3 years waiting. Was an awful op, sick as dog when i came round and leg was swollen to buggery, had about 4 weeks off work and worked hard in physio to get the 'range' back. After 6 months of pysio and gym, i was in good shape and got in to MTB. Knee has been solid since, cartlidge is mashed and it creaks a lot but its stable and it doesn't collapse for no reason. I ride MTB / Road about 200km a week and surf. Contact sports and things like squash are too risky as far as im concerned, would never want to go through injury and surgery again!!
