how were the side effects? Is it just usual scare mongering or are they pretty nasty?
Bugger all. And you can start taking it a couple of days before and stop taking it a couple of days after which is much easier.
Pricey option but well worth it.
My wife and I took it for our honeymoon and neither of us had any side effects at all.
how much you after anyway. I've got some surplus that i'll sell you cheap...
i was all fine, get it from an online pharmacy much cheaper than highstreet. its the other malaria tablet which is abit nasty, messed my mate up a treat
Thats good to hear. Just worrying when you read the list of sideeffects. Need 14, already got a prescription, I think medication is one thing I won't buy second hand 🙂
Sorry!
fair enough. they never got used on a recent trip my wife went on. sitting in the bathroom cabinet gathering dust.
are you sure your not confusing it with lariam/mefloquine ? Its the one which you take once a week and tends to have the neuro/psych side effects. Most people just get vivid dreams though. Malarone is a newer drug (and also alot more expensive) which is supposed to have fewer side effects.
Taken it a few times now for trips to Sri Lanka, India and Africa, for a range of time periods from one week to one month.
Never had any side effects or issues at all.
I've found that Asda is the cheapest place to get it.

I opted for Malarone as it was the easiest one to take (i.e. one tablet a day and you don't need to take it for weeks after you're back), plus it had the least side effects compared to all the other options. 3 weeks on it, had no problems.
Found it cheapest at Boots Online pharmacy (just over £2 per tablet I think).
aye work were pushing larium on me due to cost reasons but we have choice and i didnt fancy vivid dreams on work nights in a strange country !
heading anywhere nice ? im going to malabo for 4 months
Never had any side effects.
I've had Malerone with no problems.
I took lariam once and had some weird "slow-mo" side effects. (I turned my head and the world followed slowly afterwards!)
Lived in many malaria countries and never taken anything for them.
Caught dengue, that was nasty, but nowt I could do about it
Had crappy sleeps with weird dreams so switched to taking am rather than pm and was fine (same problem for both me and my wife).
my uk employer left the choice to us. other uk employer on the contract forced them to take quinolene? (inline with fco back then) but the us contractor said lariam/mefloquene (inline with us recommendations). guys in french guiana said don't bother. at 20% effectiveness it was better to go straight to the hospital, where they'd do a test and then pump full of lariam anyway.
don't know anyone that's done malarone.
Took Malarone for two trips to South East Asia, no side effects.
Now on Doxycycline for two years as the VSO cannot afford Malarone, and to be honest, no real side effects from that either...
If we don't take our meds the VSO can send us home...
The thing to note with drugs and side effects is that's down to the individual as much as the drug.
at 20% effectiveness it was better to go straight to the hospital, where they'd do a test and then pump full of lariam anyway.
And the ability to mask it as well, in theory allowing it to infiltrate you further.
I never worried about it in SEA. Mozzy's never really bothered me anyway, other than the one bugger that nipped me and gave me dengue.
Being aware of your clothing, time of day etc is a better deterrent.
Bugsy Malarone?
I had no idea what malarone was... especially after reading this...
My wife and I took it for our honeymoon and neither of us had any side effects at all.
MALARIA PILLS - OK - GOT IT NOW... 🙂

Think that's exactly why.
Some of the guys on the team took whichever pills their employers insisted upon or recommended. I didn't, nor did anyone in my immediate team.
3 people did get Dengue Fever though, which is not pleasant.
Just take usual precautions, cover up, wear mozzie rep., avoid getting bitten by the daytime mozzie (that's the Dengue one iirc, which you can do jack all about), edit: and all other mozzies too.
The only issue with not taking malarials is if you contract cerebral malaria- by the time you realise you may be ill, it may be too late. IE you'd be dead.
Unfortunately the area I live in is a cerebral malaria area...
I didn't react very well with it - but that just meant feeling pretty wiped out and ill for a few days. I think it's pretty unusual to react badly to it, though, and at least you're only taking it for a short period. The worst thing for me is that we flew straight back to high altitude at Cusco - I'd been fine at altitude until that point and could barely walk for a couple of days!
If you're working for an extended period, e.g. ex-pat you can't take anything as the drugs aren't rated for prolonged use as they knacker your liver over time. So all the ex-pats just accept Malaria as an occupational risk.
I've got my own test kit and treatment drugs (same thing you take as a precaution, just much bigger doses) and just carry that around.
Footflaps- where did you get your test kit?
