Talking to a bloke via IM called Xiaoming Zhang
Xi = sh ?
Zh = j as in the French jeux?
which dialect?
I dunno - that's his name as written in Roman alphabet.
Anyone speak Chinese?
Go to China. There are millions and millions of folk there who'll give it a go 😀
Don't know about the Xi, but I would agree with the Zh being like a French jeux. I worked briefly in China a number of years ago and one phrase I picked up was "Hey Gummer". No idea what it meant, but the girl I said it to laughed.
Anyone speak Chinese?
About 1.2 bn Chinese, at the very least 😉

Well... if we're giving smart-arse answers, actually no one does - the 1.2bn in China probably speak Mandarin, Cantonese or one of the 10 other sub-dialects that makes up "Chinese" .

That's a fact,
It's a thing we can't deny

Perhaps cfh was referring to that very tune.

Oui!

Enter in English on the left side = 'Xiaoming Zhang'
Translate into Chinese (simplified) on the right side = '? ? ?' (this is the proper way of the order of the name - Zhang Ziaoming) (then listen to the pronunciation by clicking the speaker sign).
The way Chinese pronounce the name are with the surname first.
In other part of Asia the spelling can be very different depending on the dialect they speak.
The same name can be written in this way Chang/Tsang Shau Ming.
In Malaysia/Singapore/Brunei they are written as Christian name + Chinese Surname + Chinese name. For example: Johnny Chang Shau Ming.
In the UK this way: 1st name + 2nd name + Surname like this - Jonny Shau-Ming Chang (note the hyphen) or Jonny Shauming Chang.
Our MD would pronounce it Ex-eye-o-ming Zz-hang

"but he's a Geordie who can't speak or read Chinese."
I asked a Chinese lady who works for me.
Xi is pronounced like 'she', but make your tongue fat when you say it.
Zh isn't a Chinese word, but Zhi is pronounced 'jeur' but cut off the end of it so you only say 'je...'.
Xi is the surname of the Chinese president, so you might be able to find someone saying it online.
I should clarify...she speaks Mandarin and is from Northern China.
The written Chinese characters/words above are an approximation by the way as there are many Chinese characters/words that can/may sound the same but different in meaning.
Can you not just call him Bob?
Have you thought about having a tattoo with his name on?

Or Brad or Craig or English surname as name ... 😆
I once explained to a Chinese girls that her English name sounds very interesting to the locals ... Her English name was Fanny. Not sure if that was intentional or wind up by someone.
We have a Nigerian employee (in Lagos) who chose Divine as his 'English' name. Little does he know that Divine is also the name of a plus size Drag Queen. Unfortunate choice I always think.
What about Bruce?
