That has some horror stories they’d like to share to put me off getting involved 🙃

Or any useful advice? But mainly horror stories to make me see sense!

I did a looooooooooong time ago for our sailing club, but I can’t remember much other than applying to the charities commission to register then opening a separate bank account with a trustee and auditors..

Most of the admin was setup by the General Manager back then, I sort of just stood in the corner and acted all official like. 🤷‍♂️🤪

Is it much different these days ?

If the commission decides your organisation is a charity and should be registered, it will:

enter your charity on the register of charities - your charity's register entry should appear on the public register within 48 hours of you being notified of this decision.

email your charity number to your charity's main contact.

Seems not, looks the same to me..

We registered a club as a community sports club. It was fairly painless but did take a lot of to and fro with HMRC over details. We had to hold an EGM to modify the club constitution but the members looked at the tax advantages and were happy to approve.

I know local authorities in UK don't do much now but did something similar around 7 years ago - and the LA had some sort of on line guidance for setting up community groups with model constitutions that met Charity Commission guidelines so could apply for funding - national bodies may help again go for not consider this but here it is add officers and names and if anyone objects and wants to go solo throw them overboard on day 1

I helped a long time ago for my local curling club.

EGM as above to reorganise the constitution. Basically the club should have charitable aims, and in the event of winding up, any assets must go to similar charities with similar goals. Cash flow wise it wasn't a problem, I think we had some land as an asset which in the event of sale, would have been subject to tax - this way, it was going towards sports charities. There was a guideline on aims and stuff for the constitution.
