just looking back at history, seems Bosch pro, DeWalt, Hitachi and Makita are recommended by most. I've got about £100 - £150max, preferably 2 batteries and a starter kit of bits n stuff (think I've seen Makita do these).

Anyone seen any good deals recently or recommend a site / chain to buy from, never bought a drill in my 50 yrs of life.

Screwfix have this:

£99 for a Bosch Professional (Blue) with 4ah LI battery. I've got one, think it's great. Although I got the package with 2x 2ah batteries, which is currently £119, but was £99 when I got it.

Makita LXT is great. If you get the 3 or 4 Ah battery then you only need one. Don't get hoodwinked into the non lxt version that b&q sell. You should be abke to get the brushless version on budget and it is better. No need for the big bit set. Just build up a kit over time working out what you need. Screwfix are generally good but there are a few online specialists like ffx worth a look.

Thanks, the Makita LXT looks good but that charging unit doesn't specify that it charges the BL1840 battery and all other sites appear to specify another (perhaps more up to date) charger, are you sure about that recommended set up nmd?. I've seen the Bosch (blue) with 4amph battery at screwfix, looks like a reasonable option also. Hmm

I also got the bosch pro like mtbtom. X2 2.0 Ah Li ion batteries and 5 nice drill bits all for £120 from screwfix. Lovely piece of kit.

Yeah, they work. I've got both the black one and the blue one.

Dare I say it but homebase had a ryobi drill and impact driver combo in the other day when I was there. About 140 I think including two batteries. Spec looked good but beyond that couldn't comment

I was not that impressed with my DeWalt, it failed just outside of the warranty period with very little use.
