I am reaching the end of my boredom threshold working in an office in a business/industry that is effectively dying. Bracing myself to be told yet again that there are no pay rises, before the boss jets off to St Lucia for his hols.
So before it's too late I am thinking of going back to the tools and retraining to be a Gas engineer/fitter.. I did an apprenticeship (16-20)in mech. fitting and spent 8 further years on the tools , so I'm not scared of getting my hands dirty...

Has anyone gone down this route and what were your experiences?...
Thanks.

My BiL is doing it now as a "Plumber".
He thinks it will be great.
They are making lots of promises about "guaranteed work", etc.
Several clients are heating/engineering companies and they all say they won't touch anyone like him!
Almost 50, office all his life, no real manual labour skill set yet he will supposedly be as "qualified" as the guys who have done apprenticeships, C&G, etc.
The market is being flooded by the training companies raping the average Joe with government money and empty promises.

I spent a year away from an IT programming job training to be a plumber/gas engineer. What I discovered was working on peoples heating and water systems in their homes is really stressful because of the nature of working with water. You really do need the patience of a saint, 3 or maybe 4 arms and also be bit of a contortionist(sp?).

I was lucky in that my old IT firm took me back on in the same job for about 5 grand more than I was on! Oh and I was loving in when I went back and still am now really 6 years on.

Apparently Mechanical engineering is OK as a career.
