Have always fancied one, have looked into the breed and have read the good points and bad but my other half is concerned about their continuous shedding and apparent smell..we had a choc labrador until recently and she shed and smelt lol...so any advice is appreciated

A mate of mine had one. It just used to sit there and do nothing. He once said "I may as well have got a pet ####ing traffic cone."

There's could have been a dud one.

That's if you can convince the stoopid nazis who run the shelters/charities that you're worthy of them deeming you fit to rescue one of their precious animals... bunch of c0cks the lot of 'em in my experience, would rather have a dog/cat languishing in a cage/pen then with an owner with too small/no ****in backyard...

We had one when we I was a kid. She was like an old duchess. Just sat there looking down her nose at everyone. She also stunk like an old carpet.

When she was a pup she was very naughty, chewing, shredding stealing socks etc - no more than my Springer is now though and he's 9 with titanium rods in his spine.

Second rescue route (sure there'll be a basset one out there somewhere). I've no garden and live in a flat but had no problems.
Only seen really ropey characters turned away (ahem phsycle ahem).

edit: Google shows plenty Droopy's helpers

Don't do it. The most stupid, stubbon, unruly and untrainable dogs in the entire world. If you don't get their nuts chopped, they will hump anything that moves and most things that don't.
Stupid animals, they should all be shot.
And I'm a dog lover!

Oh, and I friend who has one phoned a dog trainer for help, when the breed of dog came up, he slammed the phone down. Upon calling back, the trainers wife answerd and asked my friend not to call back, apparantly the last Basset almost broke the guy. When the Basset tried to shag another friends 12month old, the mother nearly broke the dog....

I grew up with them - we had three over the years as a family - 2 bitches and a dog. They largely have wonderful personalities, are the most stubborn dogs on the planet (Barbera Woodhouse had one once on her TV show - refused to ever have one on again) and hell when they get a scent. They are my favourite dog.
However, I'd never advise anyone to get one and never a rescue one. The breed in knackered - many of the breeders are perpetuating the wrong aspects and making things worse. We had been advised to 'feed our dog up' as 'he had a waist' - they should have a waist - he was a fit dog. The fashion is to have the dogs too fat now. Also, all 3 died of some form of cancer - many believe as a result of the selective in-breeding to perpetuate the wrong features. This has also led to many dogs that were too long realistically and some suffer with back problems. Eye and ear problems are in the breed too.
The dog was a rescue - a beautiful dog but hadn't wanted to show - so he was shuffled from owner to owner until we took him on. It took us 18 months to turn him around and he was never really right - but we gave him the best go possible. He had a good life with us.
They only shed in spring and autumn, same as most other dogs. They don't smell if you look after them. I love them to distraction, but I'd never have another and I'd strongly advise against getting one.
