A mate has been taking these capsules for his chest tightness/asthma for over a year now and swears by their affectiveness so much so that he doesn't need to use his inhaler anymore .
Must be honest, I'd never heard of it but a quick Google says that it's an ancient remedy for inflammatory remedy.

Wonder if it's worth looking into.....?

It's a 'traditional medicine'. A quick google of my own would suggest that no actual medicines are derived from it, and it's not like Big Pharma to leave a stone unturned which could be a new revenue source so the short answer is likely "no."

Might be worth googling "placebo effect"?

If I had asthma I think I’d rather rely on ‘traditional’ therapy like a corticosteroid and beta agonist. Effective, familiar, and easy to dose and control.

Having seen folks back in the 90s in A&E with exacerbations that needed medical intervention I’d be keen to keep things under control and have effective rescue medication on hand.

That's not quite what I meant. Alternative medicine then (I swerved that term because I hate it; there's no such thing, there's "medicine" and "not medicine").

Mullein is a lovely plant, you often see it in country gardens - a tall spike, like a big foxglove but will open yellow flowers (not related to foxglove, though).

The dried leaves are often put into herbal smoking mixes, maybe because they are soothing on the lungs? But it's also a mild narcotic, so that could also be why... Apparently (according to 'A Modern Herbal') it does have a long history of being used for pulmonary conditions. Never having had asthma myself I cannot comment on its usefullness but I would say give it a try, many people find herbal medicines very effective, despite what Cougar and co say.

Cheers, going to look into it some more.
All I can go on so far is what my mate has said and what's happened to him.
I'm guessing that it's more than placebo for him as his chest tightness has lessened enough not to have to rely on the steroid inhaler.....

@cougar I knew what you meant. I agree: there’s medicine and there’s not-medicine. I just rather liked the ambiguity of ‘traditional’.

I am unsure why folks want to dabble with expensive, potentially unsafe and ineffective ‘herbal’ remedies riddled with uncertainties over dosing and side-effects when there are effective and well-tested treatments available.

There's no 'despite' here, I agree with you, I don't doubt that they do. The placebo effect can be quite potent.

I just rather liked the ambiguity of ‘traditional’.

Ah yes, I see what you meant. Sorry, that was pre-coffee yesterday. (-:

But it’s also a mild narcotic, so that could also be why… Apparently (according to ‘A Modern Herbal’) it does have a long history of being used for pulmonary conditions.

Maybe more than placebo then.

All I can report is what he's told me at the moment
He has checked with works Occ Health and has been given the all clear to use and they are very strict on what medication is allowed or not.
So maybe it's the old placebo the Cougar keeps on about 😂

Or the poster made that up?

Well of course he has. You could say the same of Polo mints.

Sorry Cougar, you have lost me there?
Our work place has a very strict policy on what medication is allowed due to some safety critical roles, many over the counter meds aren't allowed but this wasn't flagged up by Occ Health.

They have a very strict policy on medication. They don't care about your leaves. Why do you suppose that might be?

Cougar, what Jamz said....

The dried leaves are often put into herbal smoking mixes, maybe because they are soothing on the lungs? Never having had asthma myself I cannot comment on its usefullness but I would say give it a try, many people find herbal medicines very effective, despite what Cougar and co say.

Anyway, I'll leave this here. It was a bit left field asking on here but you never know until you ask. Thanks for input folks.
