I have been asked to paint a scene of Lyndhurst cricket pavillion with some people playing cricket.

I have the basic painting but have no idea where the players would typically be standing or how many I should include. I have put in the umpire, a batter, the wicket keeper and a fielder but it is a bit sparse.

Could I include another fielder on the left and lower down that the other one, to fill that space?
Should there be others behind the wicket man, perhaps near the pavillion?

My knowledge of cricket is sketchy at best so plain English descriptions of who goes where and none of that silly mid-hard on jargon please.

I have put in... a batter,

Obvious troll is obvious. Or is this some sort of test?

Quite right. They'll be renaming the wicketkeepsman next.

Okay, what do you call the man that does the batting then?

Also, it is a village cricket match, not a Test. I know that much at least!

2 batters 1 at the receiving end, 2 umpires 1 behind the bowler and 1 square leg (more or less in line with the batter in the receiving end to there left around 10 years out). 1 bowler, 1 wicket keeper and then 9 others some near the wicket keeper.

This will give you a rough idea of areas to pick.

Also, it is a village cricket match,

Which case most of the team will be on the pub.

You need a bowler and another batsman at least. Everyone else is probably in the pub.

A batter. You were correct. There should be 2 though.

You could add a couple of slips and a short leg?

ive just googled images of the cricket club - you'll know from what perspective you are painting it, so you could get an idea from those photos if theres any more players that could be added.

if you are 'aiming' down the wicket you could add a couple or more slips ( https://teara.govt.nz/en/diagram/38278/positions-on-a-cricket-field), depends on how much room/big a field of view you have.

Make sure you get the centre half and the linebacker in the right positions. People often get those two mixed up

Slightly off topic but I've actually played village cricket at Lyndhurst 🙂

depends entirely who's bowling, the field for a fast away swing bowler would be very different to that for a left arm chinaman.

Serious - if you could put up a sketch of the painting I'm sure we could mark in a couple of relevant spaces where to put a fielder or two.

Crikey is it really 2 years since they changed that? I remember it coming in with the hundreds there about but that feels like a few months ago!

Just say they're all having tea and cake in the pavilion!

I deliberately framed the picture so the bowlers end can't be seen. The aim is to focus on the pavillion and the cricketers are just some foreground interest.

I think from Drac (useful) post I can add a couple of slips and a cover*. Thanks!

*I hope those are the right ones for a bloke below and left of the existing fielder, a bloke half way between the batter and the pavillion and another behind the wicket keeper but a bit higher up the picture.

It's behind the peculiarly empty vase.

I reckon the positioning is about right, given the position they're in I think the new one to the RHS of the picture (the slipper) would be more crouched as if waiting for a catch and as the batter seems to have played some sort of front foot drive, the one to the left of the picture would be starting to run after the ball towards the bottom left corner of the picture.

I have a theory that WCA's 'art' posts are some sort of long game massive wind up. Kind of in the vein of Radio 4's Mornington Crescent. Most people are in on it and play along but to the outside world it is utterly baffling.

If it's English batsmen you are painting, then back in the pavilion would be the obvious place, after recent results. (-:

If you want to paint batters however, maybe a baseball scene would be more appropriate.

I thought Batsman was the name of the role or position the person played and that from the group of batsmen in the team they would take it in turns to be the actual batter in play at the time. Like when Andrew Flintoff is described as an English Bowler even when he is playing as a fielder.

I will use TheOtherJonV's guide for the poses of the new players. Thanks

It is ponies, not cows, at Lyndhurst
