Although the instructions say suitable for up to 8yrs old little CJR’s ride on 6v car is severely struggling under his growing 2 and a half year old frame!
I’ve heard you can monkey about with 12v motors or bigger batteries. Anyone tried this and not exploded the car?
Thanks
A mate of mine did a few years back. He got the smallest size/highest output 12v leisure battery that he could fit, a motor from something i can't remember and he modified the on/off switch too. It ended up more of a progressive throttle as opposed to power and no power. It needed to be a leisure battery as it could cope with full drain and recharging.
I didn't have a go myself (too big and worried i would break it) but my mate did. Kids loved it, he loved it and yes, for what it was it was fast.
Cannibalise an electric golf trolley or wheelchair? Then you've got the motor, controller and battery - high capacity gel batteries don't leak either.
Yep a couple of wheelchair batteries from the now defunct ? Maplin and a beefy motor and home made circuit board .....was a blast and mrs antigee quite amazed by how much fun was had but did comment that it didn't used to go that fast ...looked at mobility chair stuff but really nothing in kids car that will it fit too not rigid enough
hmmm...off to find some 12v bits....
Thanks all
I built this for my son a few years back, Got a mobility scooter out of a skip and chopped the seat off. Mounted a Go-Kart seat, welded a small box section frame on the back to suit a battery tray and off he went. I originally intended proper speed control but found just running it on one car battery with a simple on/off switch was fine. When he got bigger and needed more speed I fitted another battery alongside the first and ran it in series to take it up to 24v. When it was 12v I fitted a cheap solar panel on top of the battery which was enough to mean I never needed to charge it.
When mine were younger I took the front of a Kettler pedal car and bolted on an electric golf cart chassis free m my neighbor. It was great and the kids loved it. Unrestricted, it was rather nippy, and the rear wheels made it look awesome.
When my nephew was a bit smaller he’d soon passed the limits of regular ride-ons due to driving it on grass etc - it seems most stuff is designed for tarmac.
Anyway, we got a mobility scooter and after a bit of modification he had an electric go-kart. Those things must be designed to be abused as it lasted years, only had one battery upgrade too. I’d definitely recommend that route if you’re handy with the spanners (and possibly a welder too).
Built one with my dad many many years ago - car battery, starter motor on a push button blip throttle to a sturmey archer 3 speed hub rear wheel. Was pretty quick when opened up but a bit melty/burny after about 15 seconds..
