Bit of a long shot but wondered if anyone can help with any advice.

My daughter has just qualified as a mid wife at UEA and is to stay in the area and work at St James Paget.

Like many young people she is struggling to find a decent place for reasonable money (on her own, NHS wages!). She hoped for something near Norwich (so easier for boyfriend to find work in the city) but right side to make travel to the hospital easier but really struggling.

Think she will now need to look more closer to Hospital (talking Yarmouth - but not hear good things about there so bit worried about that!)

Anyone have any advice on where she could look? (or even better know of any where available!)

Sorry can't help, landlord here but in other part of country. Tenants just aren't moving as rents have shot up, hence v little new stock available. Mine used to chop and change every few years, now as new rents are c 40% increase this year, they are staying.

You could try local air bnb s for a private long term deal, when I was a student I slept on a friends floor the first week whilst looking for something.

Why is your daughter taking on a longer commute (and expense of that) to accommodate her boyfriend?

I would have thought being closer to the hospital would be better for your daughter. Boyfriend can sort himself out job wise! 🙂

There will be shite areas of Norwich just like the will be in Yarmouth - I'd rather be by the coast though! 🙂

A very quick look on Rightmove finds this - doesn't seem a mad rental price...

Norwich is a good city, pretty in the centre, with lots to do for young people, Great Yarmouth is a very rundown old tourist seaside town, nothing but arcades and burger places. Not a bad commute by car along A47 from Norwich to Yarmouth though. Some pretty towns and villages inbetween the two like Salthouse, but as a young person, i'd try and stay based in Norwich.

Can she not stay in midwifery at the Norfolk and Norwich (where my wife works) i know they are crying out for midwifery staff?

I’m in Norwich, and the NHS. Happy to have a chat offline about it if that’s helpful. DM me

A lot of young people in Norwich seem to be living in shared housing rather than getting places on their own, for obvious reasons. The rent is still miserably high. There’s quite a lot of houses on Roundhouse Park that are shared, and this could be a good option. Close to the N&N (which is why they’re there) but also on the A11/A47 so easy to get out towards JPH or anywhere else. The area round the university makes a lot of sense for graduates too. Again, not too hard to get out of the city. Thorpe is closer to A47/JPH and there’s a house share on Thunder Lane (quite nice area) for £400 per month on Rightmove.

I’m not sure she’s going to want to live in Gt Yarmouth. It’s in a similar position to most big old seaside towns, with lots of depravation and not a great deal going on out of season. Gorleston, where the JPH is is nicer, but not a lot going on for young people compared with Norwich, and less in the way of shared accommodation that you’d want to live in. There’s a two bed flat with a sea view really close to the hospital for £650 per month on at the moment.

Acle might be a good compromise. It’s off the main road between Norwich and Yarmouth and has good transport links (for Norfolk). Much less expensive than Norwich and the feel of a market town. It really depends what she’s looking for, and again there aren’t loads of properties for rent, but there’s a two bed apartment on Rightmove at the moment for £825 per month.

Gt. Yarmouth....No!

Norwich is a great city.

Between the two are places such as Acle. Similarly Hoveton or Wroxham might suit...heart of the the Norfolk Broads. On an easy train line for going to Norwich or towards Cromer. Train from Wroxham to Gt. Yarmouth would mean changing at Norwich, but that doesn't sound like she is training it anyway....but the train might help with the living outside of Norwich issue. North Walsham could work as well as on the same train line butnot as great a drive to Gt. Yarmouth but perfectly doable, or at least it was as my mum used to do it daily (I grew up in N Walsham)
