My understanding is that Holland only refers to 2 areas out of 12 that make up the Netherlands...long time ago now but worked there on a regular basis and it seemed a sensitive issue maybe a bit like saying Belfast is in Ireland

Belfast is in Ireland. Which part depends on which foot you kick with…

Yep, North or South Holland? What? Groningen? Oh - not Holland then.

Another here with a Dutch partner (from Groningen).

No reply from the OP. Hope the advice needed wasn't "what number do I call for an ambulance"?

I asked about the Holland/Netherlands thing and no-one seemed remotely bothered.  Then again, they were all from Holland...

I'm a convert when it comes to mayonnaise on chips, it's a definite improvement over ketchup. Bitterballen are also excellent and should definitely be available as a bar snack in the UK.

The biking is shit, at least near Amsterdam.

@ton Brexit people on Facebook threads still insist it's perfectly possible to live and work in the EU 🙄

There's definitely a website/mail order husband business idea in all this.

'Thousands of eligible British men are desperate for an EU passport.  Order our catalog today!'

Given the landscape, the trails in the dunes by Noordwijk are surprisingly competent, and there's a long albeit fairly flat off-road long distance route to the south east of Amsterdam in a forest I can't remember the name of, but I read a good article about it.

So it's not objectively shit, and they've definitely made the most of what they have.

Hagelslag is awful, if you want chocolate on bread then Nutella or similar works just fine.

Anyone who says the biking is shit has clearly not actually taken the time to speak to a Dutch mtber and find out where some of the best curated single track ever is located. Admittedly there is no DH but if a 40km pump track in some beautiful forest is your bag then Amerongen is probably one of the best and its 50 mins from Amsterdam. There are a dozen other examples too. The mtb scene in Netherlands is awsome and having just come back from Limbergs Mooiste a couple of weeks ago where 10,000 cyclists had a sportive on and off road in the southern province of Limburg, i can tell you that us UK'ers could only dream of such a party

Interesting, Amerongen isn't too far from some of my relatives. I'll have to see if I can get there next time I'm over.

I said the biking is shit in the Amsterdam area - Amerongen is 45 miles away so that doesn't count as 'in the area' 🙂

My comment was related to being able to jump on your bike and get a nice ride from home. Even if you hack your way out of the Amsterdam suburbs into the countryside it's just flat ugly fields for the most part until you get to a town, many of which are pretty nice to be fair.  Now, given the many upsides of living in the Netherlands (which I really liked, let's be clear) you may be prepared to make that sacrifice, but compared to much of the UK and Europe as a whole, it's not what I'd call good biking.

A friend of our has just moved to Castricum (North of Amsterdam) She is a very keen cyclist (Road, Gravel and XC) and reckons The Netherlands is better for riding in everyway than the UK (She used to live in Marlow) The only thing missing is big hills/mountains but she's loving the gravel tracks through the forests near where she's living.

I rode from London To Amsterdam in 2018 - i can concur that Holland is probably the most bike friendly country i've ridden in.

It's a fabulous country to use a bike as a mode of transport but it's never going to be cycling heaven for most 'proper' cyclists, you just can't make up for the almost complete lack of hills.

Well I'm on a week's bike tour there next year as we are a little gang of ebikers, so easy to get there, new born again cyclists who think flat means easy, dope smokers so that problem solved and Irish passport holders so many problems solved. Chips and mayonnaise galore!

@dc1988 - It is very flat, but the 'Holland Hills' can make up for lack of conventional climbs!

Yep, I bang on occasionally about how retiring to Spain is now for the rich kinda pensioner,3rd country status really cranks up the shekels required.

It didn’t have to be this way even with Brexit our gov could have made a deal, but they did f’all.
