Hello.
Looking for a new mobile telephone and really struggling.

it must have/be:

Waterproof

4G

Removable battery

12MP or, preferably better, camera

Two SIM slots.

Preferably under £200 but can't see much to choose from above that.

What's out there? Had a HomTom HT20 Pro and that's died after three months! Really not impressed with that, so not keen for another HomTom. Also avoiding Apple. The Energizer Energy 500 keeps coming up on the google but can't actually find anywhere to buy one, sounds ideal apart from that. Surely it can't be this difficult to find a telephone? Why does no-one do removable batteries nowadays? That seems to be the main problem.

Cheers,

Removable batteries and being waterproof aren't great bed fellows. Do you really need both, if indeed either? It's easy to plug in a power pack for extra charge. Plenty of the waterproofing options too for the times you need it.

Definately need waterproof, and preferably drop-proof too.

Removable battery less of an issue with backup packs but experience has taught me that once they get a bit old just popping it out and in again is the best way to reset them (involves unscrewing a sealed cover on the waterproof ones) Also, that tends to be the part which needs replaced before the rest of it, don't want to chuck a perfectly good telephone because it needs a new battery.

That is resolved by fitting a new battery.

A mate has an AGM A8 which looks to fit your specs and is well under budget. It's built like a tank and he's not managed to break it despite clumsy shenanigans. He loves it.

The higher spec AGM X1 also looks to be about your budget, and has a better screen and fingerprint reader.

I’d be surprised if you could find a waterproof smartphone with a removable battery, and two SIM slots; the more holes there are in a phone’s case, the more difficult it is to make it water-resistant, let alone waterproof,  which is why more and more smartphones have non-removable batteries, USB-C charging ports, and no headphone socket. I’ve managed to get along for more than a decade without needing a removable battery on any phone I’ve owned, it’s much, much easier to carry a 10,000 mAh Anker powerpack and just plug the phone in when it needs charging, or plug it into the car, than carry a battery that then needs the mains to charge it up. Having spent nine days camping, without needing to plug my iP6+ into a mains source, it proves a removable battery just is not necessary.

I’ve just ridden through some pretty meaty thunderstorms in northern France and used a bag for the phone and bought a hard case for the trip. Was in the backpack the whole time and dry and untouched by dust and falls. Looking for the ultimate waterproof phone might mean sacrificing a lot of other features.

Do not buy a Doogee. Their T5 fits all your wish list on paper including a big claim to be IP67 waterproof. They have a video of it being thrown into a pond, recovered and switching on. I got caught in a rain shower with one I bought 7 months ago and it got moisture behind the screen and failed to switch on. They have refused to repair or replace it and are claiming IP67 doesn't mean what the international standard says it is, claiming it's my fault. I live in Spain and this was the first time the phone had got wet. Bunch of con artists.

Hello again,

Been looking at the AGM as recomended by Toby, looks a good bet. The camera on the A8 isn't great but the X1 ticks all the boxes, £230 is the cheapest I've found so far (which is £30 more than my first car!) There's an X2 with a 20MP camera but I'm not spending £500+ on a telephone considering how short their life spans are nowadays, my first Philips one lasted about 9yrs, had 5 in the 8yrs since, they just don't make stuff like they used to.

Back to the google to find the cheapest X1.

Thanks all.

Have a look on YouTube, there are plenty of mainstream phones that aren't officially waterproof but pass dunk tests that are all you'd reasonably expect from a phone unless you were being really clumsy.

As for not making phones like they used, thank god for God for that. Why on earth would you want a nine year old phone? Improvements are incremental rather than revolutionary lately but what you can buy on the high street for £150 is nothing short of amazing.

Just fine a phone that matches your other criteria ignoring the removable battery and waterproof. Then find a rugged wateeprwat case and away you go. Android phones can be reset by a long hold of the power button. If you really need to replace a battery then you can on non removable phones. Just takes a little more effort.
