Just seen a property for sale in what appears to be a nice village outside Selby but I don't know the area at all even though I currently live around 25 miles away.

Obviously we are going to have a look for ourselves at the weekend, but does anyone know the area and can tell me what it is like?

Cheers

Think there was/is a pit at Wistow. I know the Selby area reasonably well and they're all similar villages out there - not brilliant, very flat. Don't start getting nice until you head towards York and get to Escrick/Stillingfleet/Skipwith etc.

i used to drive past that way a lot, a bit dreary, flat and not a patch on your current location IMO

Yeah, but the draw is we can get a 5 bed detached property with luxury fittings, double garage, garden etc for a fraction of the price (that we couldn't afford) in Harrogate.

mmm, cheap 5 bed house with flood potential! everyone in wistow has the same blood group. cawood is ok with good pubs. selby is a bit of a shite hole, but if you like a good fight it's grand. you are at the right side for a quick escape to leeds and york. but yeah, it is V. flat_____________________________________________________.

I'd rather live in a cave in Knaresborough than a 5 bed in wistow...

I suppose it depends on what you want from life and how much time you'd actually spend at home

Flat horizon and grey sky = mental health issues

Fair enough - sounds like I am hearing all I need to know (and it explains why it is so cheap!

I think I may well save the fuel.

A cave in Knaresborough earlier...

And another

Or, if you prefer, a house built in the rock. Knaresborough is an odd little place 🙂

Friends of ours moved to Hemmingborough which isn't too far away from Wistow. What a hole. Just completely soul-less villages out that way. No surprise to us when they moved back to York pretty sharpish. Plus depending on where you work (if you're in Harrogate now), A64/York Ring Road can be living hell in rush hour.

Agreed - it can be hell at weekends too so commutes to the office in Harrogate and weekend trips to see family (all in the Harrogate area) will be problematic.

So I think that idea is canned then. Thanks for the feedback - made me see sense in my wistful idea of having a big family home. Looks like we will be stuck in our little terrace in a much nicer place for the foreseeable.

Nothing in your price range between York and Knaresborough? Cattal/Green Hammerton/Aldwark etc areas? Some lovely places around there but probably a bit more £££ but even scope for riding out the door around there...

Not really - we once saw a nice property in Green Hammerton in our price range but it sold before we got to view it. And it still wasn't a patch on the property in Wistow - but I am getting the idea now why they are so cheap there...

It'll not be too long before school catchments dominate your choice of abode.

True - and Wistow has a primary school in the village but secondary schools would be in Selby... 😕

Grew up in Selby. Left for uni. Never felt the desire to move back.

My folks still live there. We'd quite like to migrate back that way (Grandparents/grandkids) at some point, but if we did I'd be looking out towards York-way (I quite like the Pocklington area) rather than Selby.

As for Wistow itself; in my teens I went to one of the best parties of my life there, but other than that I don't think there's much of interest there. As far as I know it's quiet and pleasant enough, just not a great deal to do.
As others have said, there's bot-all in the way of interesting mtbing round that way.
