I'm looking at vans- found what I think is a goodn- transit connect 2014 drives well and looks like new. Previous owner was a chap who used it to carry his fishing gear apparently. I had a look underneath and spotted this rust in the rear arches- would that be a thing that would stop you touching it?!
It's just under 10K 41000 miles.
That's a 7 year old transit.
I assume down south.
Up here you'd be able to use those arches as extra doors by now *
That's just light surface rust by the looks of it in those videos fully to be expected on a 7 year old van
* Exaggeration..... But by 10 years old I'd be expecting to be close to welding up here on a transit.
It's oop nuurth actually! so good to go in your opinion?
Standard Ford fitment that sir....
Seen worse but.....
When I say up north I mean north Scotland .
Not the south (ie northern England)
haha fair enough, in that case I'm a southerner. It's Manchester way.
Just under 10k??
I need to get mine on the market!
That does look like normal rustage.
They're certainly not cheap- this is the best I can find at the mo. There are loads knocking about at 7k plus vat with 100k miles on the clock.
I think most Transits leave the factory with more rust than that, must be a Friday afternoon van they skimped on
Haha!! are they really that bad? Is there anything better to look at?
I paid 12k for a 22500 mile 2016 connect with a warranty so I reckon you can get that for less
Go see Graham at Van's north west on the east lancs
Sau Duncan from Eye Commercials recommends you.
Hes a trader but about the most straight guy I've ever dealt with.
Does it need to be a van?
This also has a warranty- 6 month RAC. How long ago did you but that rocketdog? I'm house hunting at the mo too, and everything in life just seems crazy expensive at the moment.
Vans are 25% at least overpriced at the moment, if it doesn’t have to be a van you could get a tourneo connect and remove the rear seats. Bonus being it’s already lined and normally a nicer spec too
I'll go out and have a look at mine in a bit, but I think those wheel arch liners have been cut back for some reason. Previous damage that has been repaired?
Transits drive okay but are a pain to look after especially as older. I run a MK7 Transit and spend more time underneath it trying to stop it dissolving. I'd buy French instead as they are galvanized.
I was wrong about the wheel arch liners, mine look like that on the fuel filler side. Including the first smattering of rust spots, (2016 model) 😤
I'll have to get the arch liners off and have a good look underneath.
RNP isn't wrong about French vans though. Previous to this my Expert was 11 years old when I chopped it in and didn't have a blob of rust. It had spent part of its life living by the coast too.

Could be worse. Could be a Merc shooting break with a ****ed flywheel ,knackered engine mounts and a heavy dose of anxiety.
All vans are shit for one reason or another...
All vans are about twice as expensive as they should be for a box with an engine...
All vans cost a fortune to maintain/fix/Mot...
Running both vans and Navaras in a business - let me tell you a Navara stays in one piece longer (a lot longe) than a Transit Custom. Based on 10 years experience.
All pickup haters jump in,i however will not be buying any more vans.
5 Navaras no repair bills just tyres, filters pads etc.
3 Transit Custom **** me i dont want to add it up.
I think the pickup haters only come out (and justifiably) when someone wants to run one as a car substitute.
Use to love old vans trainers. The new style are too narrow.

This! I kind of have to drive a van for work. You can nail all the bells and whistles to them but they are still shit.
Current Work van is a 2019 connect. Yes it's quite nice but ford couldn't be arsed to fit wider sunvisors, where there's no rear view you get blinded in low sun.
It's the only vehicle I have ever driven where I have no clue where the nose is. For some reason none of them have front parking sensors, just rear. I know where the rear is that's easy.
It's a LWB, it works well for avoiding height limits but is a pain in the arse to manoeuvre compared to the custom I had before,
As for rust, ours get moved on fairly quickly. I imagine the floors rot fast due to loads being secured by screwing wedges into the floor ply lining with wood screws and probably a bit into the floor every so often.
I just cant get my head around the cost of new vans?
4 wheel box with diesel engine one decent seat and a manual gearbox? That will be £30k + vat sir. You want it lined with shite ply no problem, £30k and it needs ply lining?
Understand the market is a little crazy currently but that seems quite high priced and I’d be tempted to hang on and shop about. We’re off to pick up a berlingo van today with about 26k on the clocks and a 65 plate and we’re paying £10160. Totally normal amount of rust for a transit which will soon be covered in lotsssssss more!
... 26k on the clocks and a 65 plate and we’re paying £10160.
Blimey, that sounds expensive too! It's only a few hundred cheaper than the 2 year old Connect I got in 2018. Low miles for a 7 year old though I suppose.

I guess that's the crux of it. While everyone agrees it's high priced (including me) there isn't anything better as far as I can see.
I want something with a bulkhead for moving soundsystems- been pushing my luck for a decade with half a ton of gear in the back of cars waiting to crush me if I have a bump. Also finding a tourneo without a disabled ramp seems challenging.

Also helpful. I have flippers for feet so will avoid from now on. Thanks.

Lulz. Any more oranges to compare to the apples.
2018 prices bare no relevance. Was your house cheaper back then too ?
If we are looking at nonsense like that I paid 8900 for a 3 year old Peugeot partner tepee - that autotrader is showing as a 10k car at 45k miles/6 year old - you'd have to be insane to pay that but Hell wbac offered 7500 on it last week* which suggests it may be halfway realistic at a dealer.
more oranges - In 2009 I bought a 2006 partner van on 38k for £3600
Bad time to be buying a vehicle/house/anything really.
* Electric curious so was seeing what my motor would be worth as a trade in
OK, maybe expensive was the wrong choice of word, maybe a lot of money would be better. There's not been that much general inflation in only 3 years to pretty much cancel depreciation!
No but there has been massive increase in demand and a decrease in availible supply .....which appears to be canceling it out. - new prices are also higher for similar reasons it seems

For Boxers / Relays, discounts of 40 - 45% on list price were common. We could buy a new van cheaper than the prices being asked for 2 year old ones.
