MrsIHN and I are thinking of going to Belfast for a few days at New Year. I'm browsing AirBnB apartments at the moment but have no idea about where's nice, where's ropey etc.

There's a nice looking place in the area of the A20/A23 junction (Albertbridge Rd/Castlereagh Rd), is it alright round there?

Not the worst area, walking distance to city centre and train station. There's nice apartments that friends have used near there, will get you the link.

Unless you are absolutely certain on air B&B the premier inn at cathedral quarter is right where you want to be.

Not dead set on Air BnB, just looking for options. The Ramada looks reasonably priced too with my Booking.com discount

Belfast reporting in. Big apartments beside the train station - which is where this sounds like - you'll be alright. Walkable into the city centre and loads of night life.

hotels can be very reasonable in belfast, been a few times in the last couple of years, even malmaisson can be had for £80, worth checking out what events are on at the arena, we saw stereophonics earlier this year (same price for the tickets + airfares as my local arena) and been to the giants ice hockey a few times.

ps. car hire can be really cheap, we paid £15 with hertz for a car pickup from belfast city, and drove up the coast to the causeway and then back to belfast international for an early evening flight.

Hmm, don't think it is. It's the west side of the river, about halfway between the river and the Connswater shopping centre

I think we're probably going to plump for the Ramada, it's right by the cathedral and pretty much the same price.

It wouldn’t be my choice. Not a bad area but could become an interesting walk into town.

there are some decent airbnb’s near the Titanic premier inn but the budget hotels are probably cheaper.

Ifyou like decent food have a look at Ox. It’s really good value Michelin star dining.

LOL....... I've just seen this thread.

I'm from Belfast.

You're in bandit country there, bae!

Thats the Short Strand or VERY VERY close to it.  You would have to be incredibly certain of the address.  You would either be in a very Loyalist area (Bottom of the Ravenhill) with Union Jacks flying or having to speak Irish to even order a taxi to get into town.

My English wife used to work in Avoniel Leisure Centre.  She could tell you some stories.

Mind you, if want to get the whole Norn Irish experience you couldnt have picked a better area.

It's almost like being offered your first spliff at a party and saying "ohhh NOOOOO, i'll skip all that soft stuff and go straight to the intravenous heroin please!"

Unfortunately, its still a very divided city.  Yes, it does have some great places to eat but putting the word "Quarter" at the end of place names does not hide the "Troubles" that are definitely still going on.

Thank you Mr Semtex 🙂

I saw the Short Strand and thought it rang a bell...

We're booked into the Ramada.
